Then, Lapa Chen (Holder of Hands) reported to the Buddha, the Bhagavan: "Venerable One, what deeds did Holder of Hands do and accumulate to attain the state of an Arhat? Alas, my two hands have been acquired after a very long time!" The Bhagavan said: "Monks, these are the visible results of karma. Do you wish to hear why he thought and spoke in this way?" "Venerable One, we would like to hear." "Monks, Holder of Hands himself, in other past lives, gathered accumulations and possessed the necessary conditions, appearing like someone crossing a torrent. Because he did and accumulated those inevitable karmas, who else would experience the karmas done and accumulated by Holder of Hands himself? Monks, the karmas done and accumulated do not ripen in the external earth element, nor do they ripen in the water, fire, or wind elements. The virtuous and non-virtuous karmas done and accumulated only ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are clung to. The karmas of sentient beings, even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas, will not be lost. When the accumulations come together and the time is ripe, they will manifest as results. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, in this very fortunate kalpa, when the lifespan of beings reached twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, complete in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, unsurpassed guide of beings to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan named Light Protector (Kasyapa Buddha) appeared in the world. He resided and dwelt in the Deer Park at Rishi Speaking in the city of Varanasi. At one time, there lived there two friendly monks, one of whom was an Arhat and also very learned. The other was an ordinary person and had heard very little. That Arhat, the very learned monk, was known by all, possessed great merit, and easily obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medicinal supplies, and he obtained many offerings. Wherever he received offerings, he pleased the donors."

Then, (he) led that close bhikkhu as an accompanying novice. After some time, one day, that Arhat was also invited away, and because he could not go, he looked for that accompanying novice, but could not find him. After that, he disappeared, and (he) led another bhikkhu. After some time, there, some young and vigorous bhikkhus said this: Venerable ones, look, today he has not taken this accompanying novice, but has taken someone else. After that, he became angry, harbored hatred towards the Arhat, and spoke harsh words, saying: If I wash his bowl from now on, may these two hands of mine disappear. The Blessed One said: Bhikkhus, what do you think? At that time, the person who was the bhikkhu friend was this person with hands, because he harbored hatred towards the Arhat and spoke harsh words, therefore he was without hands for five hundred lifetimes. Later, he felt remorse from the bottom of his heart, confessed and repented of his mistakes, thoroughly revealed and cleared them away, and therefore obtained hands. He studied there, recited, and was proficient in the aggregates, elements, sense bases, dependent origination, and what is and is not the case, and therefore now directly realized the Arhat fruit. Bhikkhus, therefore, deeds that are definitely black, their ripening will also definitely be black. Deeds that are definitely white, their ripening will also definitely be white. Mixed deeds, their ripening will also be mixed. Bhikkhus, therefore, abandon deeds that are definitely black and mixed deeds, and focus only on deeds that are definitely white. Bhikkhus, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One spoke in this way, those bhikkhus were delighted and praised what the Blessed One had said. This story called "Reverent Offerings" is about the reverent offerings of kings, great ministers, wealthy people, and palaces to the Buddha, the Blessed One.

The people around, and the merchants, and the captains, and the gods, and the nagas, and the yakshas, and the asuras, and the garudas, and the kinnaras, and the mahoragas revered, respected, painted, and offered. The gods, and the nagas, and the yakshas, and the asuras, and the garudas, and the kinnaras, and the mahoragas offered to and knew the Blessed One, the Buddha, who possessed great merit, and obtained robes, and food, and bedding, and seats, and medicine, and medicinal supplies. Together with the Sangha of Hearers, he resided in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the garden of Anathapindika. At that time, in Shravasti, there lived a Brahmin who was rich, possessed much wealth, enjoyed abundance, held widely, was vast and extensive, possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, and rivaled the wealth of Vaishravana. He took a wife from the same lineage, and together with her, he played and rejoiced, living happily and joyfully. As he played and rejoiced, living happily and joyfully, his wife became pregnant. After eight or nine months, she gave birth to a son, who was an ugly, repulsive, and unsightly boy. As soon as he was born, his mother's two breasts had no milk. After a while, the Brahmin hired another mother, but due to the ripening of the boy's karma, her milk also disappeared. Then, whenever all the methods tried to produce milk for him failed to produce milk, he raised him with compassion, and named him Compassionate Nurturing, Compassionate Nurturing. He was known as a person of little merit, and indeed he was a person of little merit, and when he grew up, he could not find any food. Then, he saw some monks, wearing well-worn monastic robes, wearing neat clothes, carrying alms bowls as black as bees, going for alms in Shravasti. Their hands and bowls were filled with food, and they came out. Having seen this, he desired to be ordained in the doctrine of the Blessed One, so he asked his parents to be able to be ordained in the doctrine of the Blessed One.
