The Blessed One, along with the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya, Vashpa, Mahanama, Bhadrika, Shariputra, Maudgalyayana, Mahakashyapa, Ananda, Nanda, and other great Shravakas, proceeded to the charnel ground in the Cool Grove. The assembly of people also saw the Blessed One and opened (their clothes). Then, the physician Jivaka cut open the right breast of that woman. Then, that child was born on his own, with white hair and limbs full of wrinkles, all parts of his body having become aged, his faculties aged, emaciated, and weak. Then, as soon as he was born, he looked at those people and said, "O Lamas, or those like Lamas, parents, Khenpos, or Acharyas, do not speak harsh words. Just as I have been in my mother's womb, between the stomach and intestines, for sixty years, I have experienced such an experience." Having said this, he remained silent. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks, "Monks, even a sentient being in their last existence will experience such an experience, so be content with being born in samsara. Be content with all the requisites for being born in samsara." Then, the Blessed One said to that child, "Child, are you an old man?" The Blessed One said, "I am an old man." "Child, are you an old man?" The Sugata said, "I am an old man." Then, from that basis, his name was given as Old Man. Then, from that basis, the Blessed One taught such a Dharma. Having heard that, many hundreds of thousands of sentient beings became weary and obtained great benefit. That old man also stayed in the household for ten years, and when he reached the age of seventy, he went forth into the teachings of the Blessed One. On Vulture Peak Mountain, he vowed to spend the summer retreat together with twenty-five monks. Then, the abbot of the Sangha stipulated that even ordinary beings should not interrupt (the retreat) at will. Then, after some time, when three months had passed, twenty-four monks attained the state of Arhat, while the old man

He was living as an ordinary individual. Then, the resident of the Sangha, while making distinctions, greatly prohibited eight things and expelled him from the assembly. After that, he took up weapons, entered his room, wept, and uttered various lamentations, saying: 'All the forests have been burned, and the mountains have turned yellow. Yet, my sinful mind has not been liberated. The sound of the springs is quiet, and the flowing waters are drying up. Yet, my sinful mind has not been liberated. These birds born from eggs, their voices are faint and small. Yet, my sinful mind has not been liberated. These forests have yellow leaves, and the trees have shed their foliage. Yet, my sinful mind has not been liberated. The upholders of the Vinaya have gone in various directions. Yet, my sinful mind has not been liberated. While living as an ordinary individual, how can I go before the Teacher? What is the use of living without purpose? I will kill myself with a weapon,' he said. At that time, there was nothing that the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, did not know, did not see, did not perceive, or did not understand. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, possessed great compassion, engaged in benefiting the world, possessed a unique protector, were uniquely brave, unmatched, did not speak in two ways, dwelt in tranquility and insight, manifested the three knowledges, were well-trained in the three trainings, were skilled in the three bases of discipline, had crossed the four rivers, had extremely firm soles of feet from the four miraculous legs, had long been familiar with the four objects of collection, were fearless with the four fearlessnesses, proclaimed the great roar of the supreme lion of the herd, had abandoned the five limbs, had completely transcended the five migrations, possessed the six limbs, had perfected the six perfections, dwelt in the six things to be constantly dwelt in, were rich with the flowers of the seven branches of enlightenment, taught the eightfold path, were skilled in the nine gradual abidings of meditative absorption, and possessed the ten powers.
