Disregarding respect. The gods with power and near relatives worship and remember, becoming the object of respectful speech. Then, the venerable Subhuti thought about where he had died from, where he was born, and by what karma he was born. He saw that for five hundred lifetimes he had died from dragons and was born only as a dragon. Then, the thought arose in him: Because I have accumulated the cause of hatred in this way, I have been born only as a dragon for five hundred lifetimes. For that very reason, I have experienced great suffering. Now, by all means, I must not allow others to generate hatred towards me, and in accordance with that, after separating from the body, I must not fall into evil destinies and evil paths, and be born in the hells of sentient beings. Having thought thus, he took the right path of abiding in freedom from afflictions and remained there. When he wanted to stay for alms in the Sangha, or in a town, or in a village, or in a region, at the very beginning he would look at the place of conduct, thinking, 'If I am seen, even an ant should not become angry with me for anything.' He abandoned that conduct and changed to another, and he made the minds of those sentient beings happy. Even though he was already an Arhat, he still experienced such fear. Then, the venerable Subhuti had the thought: 'Now I will benefit many beings.' Then, through miraculous power, he manifested five hundred Garudas. Seeing them, the dragons were frightened and terrified, displeased and at a loss as to what to do to each other. Then, Subhuti again protected them with the power of miracles. Then, their minds became happy and they uttered words of love. Then, he again transformed into the form of a great dragon and tormented five hundred Garudas, and they too were frightened and uttered words of love. In this way, he subdued five hundred families of dragons and five hundred families of Garudas. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: 'Monks, this is the best of my disciples who abide without afflictions: this son of good family, Subhuti.' Then, the monks

Doubts arose in us, and in order to dispel all doubts, I asked the Buddha, the Blessed One. Venerable Subhuti, by what actions does he attain the supreme state of being free from afflictions? The Blessed One said: O monks, Subhuti himself, in other past lives, possessed the accumulation and the completion of causes and conditions, and like a bursting dam, the actions that come without being exhausted, have been done and accumulated. Could someone else experience the actions done and accumulated by Subhuti himself? O monks, the actions done and accumulated do not mature in the external realm of earth, nor do they mature in the realms of water, fire, and wind. The actions of good and evil, done and accumulated, mature only in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. The actions of sentient beings are not lost even after hundreds of eons. When the accumulation and the time arrive, they will ripen into their own fruit. O monks, in the past, in this very fortunate eon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, perfect in knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone, the Knower of the World, the unsurpassed guide of beings to be tamed, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Treasury, appeared in the world. He dwelt in the Deer Park where sages speak in the city of Varanasi. Then, he renounced there. After giving alms and excellent alms, he protected the place of pure conduct for ten thousand years and made the aspiration: By this root of virtue, the arising of the mind, and the complete giving of the Dharma to be given, may I, in the future, when the Blessed One Light Treasury said to the Brahmin boy, 'O Brahmin boy, when your lifespan is one hundred years, you will become the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni,' may I renounce in that teaching and attain the supreme state of being free from afflictions. By what actions?

If asked what it means to be born as a Naga, it is because one has not abandoned afflictions, the senses are confused, the path of karma has not been completely accomplished, and having generated hatred towards monks who are in training and those who are not, one has uttered the word "venomous snake," and therefore is born as a Naga. By giving charity and excellent charity, and guarding the place of pure conduct, he has now manifestly realized the state of an Arhat, and has shown the supreme state of dwelling without afflictions. Monks, in this way, those actions that are definitely black will definitely have a black result. Those actions that are definitely white will definitely have a white result. Mixed actions will have mixed results. Monks, therefore, abandon those actions that are definitely black and mixed actions, and dedicate yourselves solely to those actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The Hundred Parables Beginning with "Ganga," Volume Twenty-one. "The Elder" refers to the fact that kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers honored, respected, regarded as teachers, memorized, and made offerings to the Buddha, the Blessed One. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was honored and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers, possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medicinal supplies. Together with the Sangha of Hearers, he resided and dwelt in the Bamboo Grove of Radiance in Rajagriha. At that time, in Rajagriha, there was a wealthy merchant, possessing much wealth and great enjoyment, fully grasping and widely knowing Vaishravana's.
