Having appeared in the world, for a time a Pratyekabuddha came before that beggar. Then, the beggar, seeing the peaceful conduct of the Pratyekabuddha, felt great joy. With that great joy, he offset his own suffering and offered that burden to the Pratyekabuddha. Then, that Pratyekabuddha, in order to increase his great joy, manifested in the sky like a king of swans spreading its wings, and displayed various miracles. Then, that beggar, seeing the extremely rare miracle that made gods and humans believe, prostrated at his feet like a tree cut from its roots, and prayed: 'By the root of virtue of offering to the worthy ascetic who has attained accomplishment, and by generating the mind of enlightenment, and by completely giving away the Dharma to be given, may I be born into a noble family wherever I am born, and may I obtain such Dharmas. May I please teachers who are even more excellent than this, and may I not displease them.' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, what do you think? The one who was a beggar at that time was this Bhadrika. By the ripening of the karma of offering the burden to the Pratyekabuddha, he was born into a wealthy family of the Shakya clan. Furthermore, he went forth during the time of the Buddha Krakucchanda, and he guarded the place of pure conduct there for ten thousand years, and therefore he has now directly realized the state of an Arhat. Monks, therefore, those karmas that are definitely black, their ripening will also definitely be black. Those karmas that are definitely white, their ripening will also definitely be white. Mixed karmas, their ripening will also be mixed. Monks, therefore, one should abandon those karmas that are definitely black and mixed karmas, and focus solely on those karmas that are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way.' After the Blessed One had spoken thus, those monks rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One. Thus ends the chapter entitled 'Protecting the Country'.

The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, were revered by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, navigators, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. They were honored as teachers, regarded as examples, and offered to. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who were offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicines for the sick, and medical supplies. Together with the monastic community of shravakas, they resided in a place called Guspoce, dwelling in the forest of Guspoce. At that time, in the land of Guspoce, a king named Unpleasant Sound was ruling. During his reign, there was prosperity, flourishing, peace, good harvests, and the land was filled with many people. Disputes and battles were pacified, and there was no conflict, internal strife, thieves, famine, or disease. They possessed rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffaloes, and the king, endowed with dharma, ruled the kingdom according to dharma, a king of dharma. Then, his nephew, named Protector of the Land, who was handsome, pleasing to the eye, beautiful, and possessed all limbs and features, was seen by the Bhagavat as the time for taming him had come. In the early morning, he put on his lower garment and dharma robes, carried his alms bowl, and proceeded to the land of Guspoce for alms, with the community of monks leading the way and the assembly of monks following behind. Protector of the Land saw the Buddha, the Bhagavat, whose body was perfectly adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, surrounded by a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, and who was all-good like a walking mountain of jewels. Upon seeing him, he immediately felt joy in his heart towards the Bhagavat. Having generated joy, he prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavat and requested to be ordained.
