Peace and disturbances will cease, and in this way, this great mass of suffering will also cease. Monks, my Dharma is well-spoken, clearly distinguished, cutting off causes, and correctly and well-taught to all beings, including gods and humans. Therefore, for the well-spoken Dharma, the clearly distinguished Dharma, the Dharma that cuts off causes, and the Dharma that is correctly and well-taught to all beings, including gods and humans, it is only reasonable for a son of good family who has gone forth with faith to strive in the Teacher's teachings. This is the reason to practice. This is the reason to be mindful. It is easy for all the flesh and blood of the body to dry up, leaving only skin, fluid, and bones. Having exerted effort in the Dharma, possessing strength, possessing diligence, possessing joy, possessing power, and not abandoning effort, whatever is to be attained, until it is attained, one should not abandon effort in the meantime. Why is that? Because the lazy one dwells in suffering, and sinful, unwholesome dharmas completely afflict him, causing rebirth, accompanied by plagues, possessing the ripening of suffering, and mixed with future birth, aging, and death. Therefore, his great purpose will also be completely lost. Having exerted effort, one dwells in happiness, and sinful, unwholesome dharmas do not completely afflict him, do not cause rebirth, are not accompanied by plagues, do not possess the ripening of suffering, and are not mixed with future birth, aging, and death. Therefore, his great purpose will also be completely fulfilled. Monks, it is like this: the Teacher also manifestly abides and teaches the Dharma that brings near to peace, that completely liberates from suffering, that leads to perfect enlightenment. The scriptures spoken by the Sugata are worthy of drinking the essence. Monks, therefore, those who correctly see their own benefit, the benefit of others, and the benefit of both, should each learn these well. How can we make our going forth meaningful, fruitful, and bring happiness?

will also ripen. As for the robes, food, bedding, cushions, medical treatments, and medicines that we enjoy, how can we make those offerings have extremely great fruits, extremely great benefits, extremely great blessings, and extremely great scope? You monks should train yourselves in this way. When this Dharma category was being taught, King Kapina the Great, along with his retinue of eighty thousand ministers, shattered the twenty towering peaks of the mountain of the view of the perishable aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, and directly realized the fruit of stream-entry. Having seen the truth, he went forth into the teachings of the Blessed One. Through diligence, practice, and effort, he realized that this wheel of samsara of the five-eyed ordinary being is wavering and unstable, and thus determined that the nature of all conditioned phenomena is that of decay, fall, dissipation, and destruction. Having abandoned all defilements, he directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become free from desire in the three realms, possessed a mind that equated gold and dung, and resembled the sky and the palm of the hand. He became as cool as if soaked in sandalwood, and shattered the shell of the egg with wisdom. He obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge. He did not look to worldly gain, attachment, and respect. He was worshipped by the gods with power and attendants, and became an object worthy of remembrance and reverence. Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable Kapina, what deeds did he perform that resulted in his having a beautiful and pleasing appearance, and possessing the great power of being accompanied by a retinue of eighty thousand ministers? And also, after going forth, he directly realized the state of an Arhat?" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, Kapina himself, in other past lives, accumulated merit and possessed the complete conditions, appearing like one who overcomes rapids, and performed and accumulated those deeds that will not be devoured by demons. Who else will experience the deeds that Kapina himself has done and accumulated? Monks, deeds have been done...
