Son of Maudgalyayana, may you and the four assemblies in Jambudvipa be well. The son of Maudgalyayana reported: Venerable one, the four assemblies in Jambudvipa wish to see the face of the Blessed One, so they say this: Venerable one, the people of Jambudvipa do not have the miraculous powers and abilities to go to the Thirty-three Heavens to see the Blessed One, to approach the Blessed One, and to serve the Blessed One. But if the gods of the Thirty-three Heavens have the miraculous powers and abilities to go to Jambudvipa to see the Blessed One, to approach the Blessed One, and to serve the Blessed One, then out of compassion, may the Blessed One descend from the Thirty-three Heavens to Jambudvipa. The Blessed One said: Son of Maudgalyayana, then go to Jambudvipa and tell the four assemblies: O Blessed One, in seven days the Blessed One will descend from the Thirty-three Heavens to Jambudvipa, to the foot of the Udumbara tree in the Apadara forest on the outskirts of the city of Light. Then, the venerable great son of Maudgalyayana, having heard the words of the Blessed One, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and in what manner did he focus his mind? Just as a strong man extends his arm from a bent position, or bends his arm from an extended position, the venerable great son of Maudgalyayana disappeared from the Thirty-three Heavens and arrived in Jambudvipa, abiding in such a samadhi. Then, the venerable great son of Maudgalyayana came to Jambudvipa and announced to the four assemblies: O Blessed One, in seven days the Blessed One will descend from the Thirty-three Heavens to Jambudvipa, to the foot of the Udumbara tree in the Apadara forest on the outskirts of the city of Light. Then, when seven days had passed, the Blessed One descended from the Thirty-three Heavens to Jambudvipa, to the foot of the Udumbara tree in the Apadara forest on the outskirts of the city of Light.

When he went to the place of appearing light, hundreds of thousands of creatures gathered to see the Blessed One. Then, a person who was born disguised as a monk appeared there. He invited the Blessed One and his Shravaka Sangha, as well as the gods, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great pythons, to a feast. Soon, when the sun rose to the height of an umbrella, as soon as he generated the mind of enlightenment, heavenly thrones covered with magnificent silk appeared, as well as heavenly food and drink. Then, the person who was born disguised as a monk satisfied the Blessed One with heavenly food, and also showed great respect to the gods, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great pythons. Then, the Blessed One understood his thoughts, habits, nature, and essence, and taught the Dharma accordingly. Having heard this, the person who was born disguised as a monk realized that this wheel of the five aggregates of samsara is shaking and unstable, and he thoroughly understood that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of decay, fall, dissipation, and destruction. He abandoned all defilements and realized the state of Arhat. This Arhat, having become free from the desire of the three realms, regarded gold and dung as equal, possessed a mind that was indistinguishable from the sky and the palm of his hand, became as cool as sandalwood soaked in water, destroyed the shell of the egg with wisdom, obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and perfect discernment, did not look to worldly gain, attachment, and respect, and became an object of worship, reverence, and respect by the gods with power and attendants. Then, the monks became doubtful, and in order to cut off all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, what deeds did the person who was born disguised do that he was born disguised? And, as soon as he generated the mind of enlightenment, everything he thought and desired was fulfilled?' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, the person who was born disguised accumulated merit in other past lives, and possessed the conditions for accomplishment, so he appears like crossing a great river, and will not be devoured by obstacles.'

Having done and accumulated those karmas, who else would experience those karmas that the spontaneously born one himself did and accumulated? Monks, the karmas that are done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realm of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous karmas that are done and accumulated will ripen only in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. The karmas of sentient beings will not be exhausted even in hundreds of kalpas. When they gather and the time arrives, they will ripen into fruit. Monks, in the past, ninety-one kalpas ago, when the lifespan of beings was eighty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, Tamer of Beings, Supreme, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Vipashyin, appeared in the world. He resided in the city of Bandhumati. Then, for a while, in a solitary place without a village, five monks vowed to spend the summer retreat. Among them, one monk served as attendant to the four monks. Through diligence, practice, and effort, they abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of Arhat. Another monk prostrated at their feet and made the aspiration: 'Like this, through these beings relying on me, having directly realized the state of Arhat, by this root of virtue, aspiration, and completely giving away the Dharma to be given, may I be ordained and not be troubled by various possessions.' Monks, what do you think? At that time, the monk who served as attendant was this spontaneously born one. Questioner: Venerable one, what karmas did the spontaneously born one do to become spontaneously born? The Bhagavan said: Monks, in the past, in this very Fortunate Aeon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One,
