These giving life, completely protecting from poverty, and placing in the ultimate of secrecy, beyond sorrow, is truly wonderful! The Blessed One said: Monks, now that I am free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, and from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and turmoil, having become completely liberated, all-knowing, omniscient, having gained mastery over all wisdom and knowledge, when I gave life to these five hundred merchants including the ocean, completely protected them from poverty, and placed them in the ultimate of secrecy, beyond sorrow, what is so wonderful about this? In the past, when I was still in desire, in hatred, in delusion, and had not yet completely liberated myself from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and turmoil, I also protected these merchants. Listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Monks, long ago in the past, on a certain seashore, there lived a hermit endowed with five supernormal powers, practicing severe austerities, eating roots and fruits, wearing animal skins and bark, and performing fire sacrifices. He was compassionate, magnanimous, desired the Dharma, loved beings, and protected all those who were impoverished. Then, after some time, five hundred merchants from Varanasi desired to go into the great ocean. They gradually went on and on until they reached the seashore. When they saw the hermit, they developed faith, prostrated at his feet, and prayed: Blessed One, if we encounter any poverty from entering the ocean, Blessed One, please protect us. The hermit also agreed, saying, "So be it." Then, those merchants took the jewels and set off for Jambudvipa (the southern continent). After some time, a black Rakshasa wind swept over them.

Then, from the circling, that sage completely protected them. Thereafter, the ship's purpose was accomplished, and without delay, they returned and went to the sage, saying: 'O great sage, with difficult effort and the nature of compassion, what are you doing and abiding in?' He said: 'In this blind world without a guide and without complete guidance, in order to liberate beings who have not been liberated, to release those who have not been released, to give breath to those who have not been given breath, and to completely deliver those who have not completely passed beyond sorrow, may I become a Buddha.' They said: 'When you become a Buddha, please remember us as well.' The sage said: 'So be it.' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, what do you think? Who was the one who became a sage at that time? It was I. Those merchants are these, such as the ocean, and at that time I also completely protected them.' Furthermore, the Blessed One went forth during the time of Light Protector, and there they completely matured their faculties, therefore now they have directly realized the state of an Arhat. Monks, therefore, those actions that are definitely black, their ripening will also definitely be black. Those actions that are definitely white, their ripening will also definitely be white. Mixed actions, their ripening will also be mixed. Monks, therefore, abandon those actions that are definitely black and mixed, and only dedicate yourselves to those actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way.' After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The one called "Snama": The Buddha, the Blessed One, was honored and respected as a teacher by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, the people of the palace retinue, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas.

Gods and, Nagas and, Yakshas and, Asuras and, Garudas and, Kinnaras and, Mahoragas and others worshipped and knew, the Bhagavan Buddha, endowed with great merit, having obtained robes and, food and, bedding and, cushions and, medicines and, medicinal supplies. Together with the Sangha of Shravakas, he was residing in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Garden of Anathapindika. At that time, in Shravasti, there lived a householder who was rich and had much wealth and great enjoyment, possessing vast and extensive holdings, endowed with the wealth of Vaishravana, and comparable to the wealth of Vaishravana. He took a wife from the same lineage, and together with her, he played and rejoiced, living happily and joyfully. As he played and rejoiced, living happily and joyfully, a son was born to him, named Socoksi. At that time, the Venerable Maudgalyayana was begging for alms in that house. Then, that householder had this thought: 'This Venerable Maudgalyayana is renowned for the greatness of the ripening of merit. If I have a son, I will offer him to him as a disciple. I will make a request to him.' Then, that householder invited the Venerable Maudgalyayana into his house and offered him food, and then prayed, 'Venerable, if I have a son and he does not die, I will offer him to the Venerable as a disciple.' The Venerable Maudgalyayana said, 'Do not forget the vow you have made.' Then, after some time, they again played and rejoiced, living happily and joyfully. As they played and rejoiced, living happily and joyfully, his wife became pregnant, and a fragrant scent emanated from her body. Then, after some time, after eight or nine months, a son was born, a boy who was handsome, pleasing to look at, and beautiful, wearing a small topknot of heavenly jasmine flowers. Then, after he was born, a birth celebration was held, and he was named Sumana. Then, the Venerable Maudgalyayana was invited into the house for a meal, and the boy was offered to him. Then, the Venerable Maudgalyayana gave him some colored Dharma robes and also made good wishes for him to live long. Then, when he was born and reached the age of seven, his parents
