Although he played, rejoiced, and indulged, he had neither son nor daughter. He clasped his hands together and thought, "Although I possess many household riches, I have neither son nor daughter. After I die, because there is no son, all my possessions will be seized by the king." He was deeply troubled in his heart. Then, ascetics, Brahmins, diviners, friends, relatives, and other kinsmen urged him, "Pray to the gods!" So, because he was without a son and desired one, he prayed to Gulang, the water god, Kubera, Indra, Brahma, and other distinct deities. For example, he prayed to the gods of the groves, the gods of the forests, the gods of the crossroads, the gods of the three-way intersections, the gods who receive offerings, those born together, those who share the same faith, and the gods who always follow behind. Although there is a saying in the world that sons and daughters are born through prayer, that is not the case. If sons and daughters were born through prayer, then like a Chakravartin king, each person would have a thousand sons. In reality, sons and daughters are born from the convergence of three conditions. Which three? The parents' desire is aroused and they unite, the mother is in her fertile period and menstruating, and a Gandharva arrives. Then, White Woman was entrusted to eight nurses: two nurses who nurtured her in their laps, two nurses who nursed her, two nurses who washed away dirt, and two nurses who played with her. These eight nurses raised her with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, butter essence, and other excellent items, and she grew rapidly like a lotus in the sea. As much as White Woman grew, so did her clothes, and they never became dirty, nor was her body stained by dirt. Then, when White Woman gradually grew up, the sons of kings and many sons of merchants came to ask for her hand in marriage. Then, these people caused trouble, and her father clasped his hands together and thought: "If I give her to one, the others will become my enemies," and he was worried in his heart.
