At that time, ninety-one kalpas ago, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, complete in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Lokavidu, Anuttara-purusa-damya-sarathi, Shasta Deva-manushyanam, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Vipasyin appeared in the world. He resided in the palace of King Kinsman. After some time, the Samyaksambuddha Vipasyin, having completed all the deeds of a Buddha, like a fire that has consumed its fuel, completely entered the realm of Nirvana without remainder of aggregates. Then, King Kinsman made offerings to the relics of that Bhagavan, and built a stupa made of four kinds of precious jewels, one yojana in circumference and one yojana in height. There, hundreds of thousands of creatures, by honoring it, will go to higher realms and attain liberation. Then, when the offerings to that stupa began, Brahmins and faithful householders made offerings with incense, garlands of flowers, various kinds of perfumes, umbrellas, banners, and the sounds of music. Then, after some time, a man played games with the king and nobles, and won a precious jewel, a fire crystal, in a game of dice. Then, he generated faith and hung that jewel on the needle-hole of the stupa of Bhagavan Vipasyin, bowed at his feet and made the aspiration: "By this root of virtue, generation of bodhicitta, and complete giving of the Dharma to be given, may I also obtain such qualities! May I please such a teacher! May I not displease him! May such a precious jewel also always be on the top of my head, being born from my mother's womb!" The Bhagavan said: "Monks, what do you think? At that time, at that time, the one who cheated in the gambling game was none other than myself today. Because he honored the stupa of Bhagavan Vipasyin and hung the precious jewel, therefore, this precious jewel arose from the top of my head, and the reason is that very thing."

Because of his good looks, pleasing appearance, and beauty, he manifested the state of an Arhat. Monks, therefore, those actions that are definitely dark, their ripening will also definitely be dark. Those actions that are definitely white, their ripening will also definitely be white. Mixed actions, their ripening will also be mixed. Monks, therefore, one should abandon those actions that are definitely dark and mixed actions, and only dedicate oneself to those actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One spoke thus, the monks rejoiced and praised the words spoken by the Blessed One. The meaning of "Great Banner" is: Kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas all revered, respected, regarded as teachers, kept in mind, and made offerings to the Buddha, the Blessed One. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicines, and medical supplies. Together with the monastic community of Shravakas, he resided in the Nyagrodha Grove in Kapilavastu. At that time, in Kapilavastu, there lived a Shakya man who was rich, wealthy, and enjoyed great prosperity, with extensive holdings, possessing the wealth of Vaishravana, and rivaling the wealth of Vaishravana. He took a wife from his own clan, and together they played, rejoiced, and enjoyed themselves. As he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed himself, his wife became pregnant. After his wife was pregnant for eight or nine months, she gave birth to a boy, who was handsome, pleasing to the eye, and beautiful, surpassing the color of humans, but not yet attaining the color of the gods. When that boy was born,

The gods raised divine banners from all directions and played divine musical instruments. They also scattered divine flowers such as utpala, lotus, kumuda, and white lotus, filling the entire city of Kapilavastu with fame. Every household raised banners for this reason. Then, they celebrated the birth of the child and proceeded to name him. The relatives said, "When this child was born, fame spread throughout the world, therefore, this child should be named 'Fame'." Then, the boy named 'Fame' was entrusted to eight nurses: two nurses to raise him on their laps, two nurses to breastfeed him, two nurses to wash away impurities, and two nurses to play with him. These eight nurses nurtured him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, essence of ghee, and other excellent provisions, causing him to grow vigorously like a lotus in a lake. He was faithful, virtuous, had good thoughts, engaged in benefiting himself and others, was compassionate, magnanimous, and desired the Dharma. Later, one day, the boy named 'Fame' went to the Nyagrodha Garden, where he saw the Buddha, the Bhagavan, whose body was adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great being, beautified with the eighty minor marks, radiant with light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, and perfect like a moving mountain of jewels. As soon as he saw him, he developed joy in his mind towards the Bhagavan. Having developed joy, he prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan and sat before the Bhagavan to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan understood his thoughts, habits, inclinations, and nature, and taught him the Dharma that would lead to the realization of the Four Noble Truths. Having heard this, the boy named 'Fame' destroyed the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, attained the fruit of stream-entry, saw the truth, and gave charity and generous donations to monks, Brahmins, the poor, and...
