Having abandoned all defilements, they directly realized the state of Arhat. The Arhats, having become free from the desires of the three realms, regard gold and dung as equal, possess a mind as indistinguishable as the sky and the palm of the hand, have become cool like sandalwood soaked in water, have shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, have attained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, do not look to worldly gain, attachment, and reverence, and have become a place of worship, awe, and respectful praise for the gods and their retinues. Then, the monks arose with doubts. The one who cuts off all doubts, asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan: "Venerable one, what deeds did these hundred young monks do, that they have become brothers and possess great strength?" The Bhagavan said: "In other past lives, these ones accumulated merits and possessed the complete conditions. Like a raging flood, they came and did and accumulated those deeds that would not be devoured by demons. Since they themselves did and accumulated these deeds, how could others experience them? Monks, the deeds that have been done and accumulated will not ripen in the external element of earth, nor will they ripen in the elements of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds that have been done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped." The actions of sentient beings will not be lost even in hundreds of eons. When the collection [of causes] occurs and the time arrives, they will ripen into their own fruit. Monks, in the past, in a bygone age, ninety-one eons ago, there appeared in the world a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a tamer of beings to be tamed, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, a Bhagavan, named Vipashyin. He resided in the royal palace of Kinship-Possessed. After some time, the perfectly complete Buddha Vipashyin performed all the deeds of a Buddha, and like a fire that has consumed its fuel, entered into the realm of nirvana without remainder of aggregates.

They passed completely into nirvana. Then, the king with relatives and kin, having made offerings to the relics of that Bhagavan, erected a stupa made of four kinds of precious jewels, one yojana in circumference and one yojana in height. There, hundreds of thousands of beings, having paid homage, will go to higher realms and liberation. Then, after some time, a hundred playmates appeared outside, and seeing that stupa, they remembered the qualities of the Thus-Gone One. Together they anointed it with sesame oil and incense, and also made offerings of flowers, garlands, and lamps. Together they made the aspiration: "Wherever we are born, may we become brothers, and may we arise from the same food! May we obtain the strength of the Chandalas and possess beautiful forms! In the future, may we also please the fully enlightened Buddhas! May we not displease them!" Monks, what do you think? Those who were playmates at that time were these Chandalas. Because they together paid homage to that stupa, they were born together in this way and obtained the strength of the Chandalas. Because of their aspiration, they ordained in complete harmony and attained the state of Arhats. Monks, therefore, the results of actions that are definitely black will also definitely be black. The results of actions that are definitely white will also definitely be white. The results of mixed actions will also be mixed. Monks, therefore, abandon actions that are definitely black and mixed actions, and focus solely on actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. The Bhagavan spoke thus, and those monks rejoiced and praised what the Bhagavan had said. The Hundred Discourses of the Chandala and Others, Volume Sixteen, called "The Sun." This is the Buddha.
