Thereafter, having abandoned all defilements, the state of Arhat was directly realized. The Arhat, having become free from the desire of the three realms, regards gold and dung as equal, possesses a mind like the sky and the palm of the hand, having become cool like sandalwood soaked in water, having destroyed the shell of the egg with wisdom, having obtained wisdom, supernormal knowledge, and individual perfect knowledge, not looking at the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, has become a place where the gods with their retinues worship, remember, and speak with reverence. Then, the monks arose with doubts and asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable One, what deeds did Fragrant Perfume do, that from his mouth comes the fragrance of the Utpala flower, and from his whole body comes the fragrance of sandalwood?" The Bhagavan said: "Monks, Fragrant Perfume himself, in other past lives, has accumulated collections and possessed accomplished conditions, and has come like a flood, and because he has done and accumulated those deeds that will not be eaten by demons, who else will experience those deeds that Fragrant Perfume himself has done and accumulated? Monks, the deeds that have been done and accumulated will not mature in the external realm of earth, nor will they mature in the realm of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds that have been done and accumulated will only mature in the aggregates, realms, and sources that have been grasped. The actions of sentient beings will not be lost even for hundreds of kalpas. When the collections gather and the time arrives, they will mature into their own fruit. Monks, in the past, in a past time, ninety-one kalpas ago, there appeared in the world the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Guide of Beings to be Tamed, the Unsurpassed, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, named Vipashyin. At that time, he resided and dwelt in the palace of the king's relatives, and after a while, the perfectly complete Buddha Vipashyin, having performed all the deeds of a Buddha, passed away like a fire that has consumed its fuel.

Completely extinguished all afflictions and entered the realm of Nirvana without remainder. Then, King Kinsfolk made offerings to the relics of the Blessed One, and built a stupa made of four kinds of precious jewels, one yojana in circumference and one yojana in height, and also established the festival of the stupa. A householder also developed faith in this, offered various kinds of incense and unguents, and after making offerings with incense and flowers, made the aspiration: "By this root of virtue, the arising of the mind of enlightenment, and the complete giving of the Dharma of generosity, may I also obtain such qualities, may I please such a teacher, and may I not displease him." The Blessed One said: "Monks, what do you think? Who was the householder at that time? It was this fragrant boy, who became so fragrant because of his respect for the stupa of the Fully Enlightened One. The aspiration he made caused him to realize the Arhatship in this life. Monks, therefore, actions that are definitely black, their ripening will also definitely be black. Actions that are definitely white, their ripening will also definitely be white. Mixed actions, their ripening will also be mixed. Monks, therefore, abandon actions that are definitely black and mixed actions, and only dedicate yourselves to actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way." After the Blessed One said this, the monks rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One.
