also becomes a tempter. Monks, therefore, abandon those that are definitely black deeds and tempting deeds, and devote yourselves solely to those that are definitely white deeds. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, those monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The story of "Fragrant Purity" is as follows: The Buddha, the Blessed One, was honored, respected, revered, and worshipped by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was worshipped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine, and medical supplies. Together with the monastic community of shravakas, he resided in the Nyagrodha Grove in Kapilavastu. At that time, in Kapilavastu, there lived a wealthy householder, rich in possessions, enjoying great abundance, vast and extensive, possessing wealth comparable to that of Vaishravana (梵文:Vaiśravaṇa,वैश्रवण), the son of Vaisravana, and even rivaling his wealth. He took a wife from a family of equal status, and together they played, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness. As they played, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness, his wife conceived a child. When she was eight or nine months pregnant, she gave birth to a son, a boy who was handsome, pleasing to look at, and beautiful, surpassing the complexion of humans, but not yet attaining the complexion of gods. From his mouth emanated the fragrance of the utpala flower, and from his entire body emanated the fragrance of sandalwood. Then, they held a celebration for the birth of the child and began to name him, saying, "What name should we give this boy?" His relatives said, "Because the fragrance of the utpala flower emanates from his mouth, and the fragrance of sandalwood emanates from his entire body, therefore, we should name this boy 'Fragrant Purity.'" After that, the boy

He was entrusted to eight mothers: two mothers who lived in fragrant embraces, two mothers with full breasts, two mothers who washed away dirt, and two mothers who played and frolicked. These eight mothers nurtured him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, the essence of ghee, and all sorts of other excellent provisions, so that he grew up like a lotus in the sea. Moreover, by the power of the force of past causes, he was endowed with faith, virtuous and with good intentions, engaged in benefiting himself and others, compassionate, of great character, and desirous of the Dharma. When the fragrant boy, adorned with armlets, necklaces, and bracelets, entered the street, the fragrance of sandalwood pervaded the entire city. Many people smelled the heavenly scent and were exceedingly amazed, saying, 'Alas! This is the power of merit!' Later, the fragrant boy went to the Nyagrodha Garden. There, he saw the Buddha, the Bhagavan, whose body was perfectly adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, radiant with a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, like a moving mountain of jewels, all-good. As soon as he saw him, he generated joy in the Bhagavan. Having generated joy, he bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat before the Bhagavan in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan, understanding his thoughts, predispositions, faculties, and nature, taught him the Dharma in such a way that he would realize the Four Noble Truths. Having heard this, the fragrant boy, with the wisdom vajra, shattered the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates, and directly realized the fruit of stream-entry. Having realized the truth, he asked his parents and went forth into the teachings of the Bhagavan. Through diligence, practice, and effort, he realized that this wheel of samsara, composed of the five aggregates, is wavering and unstable. He thoroughly understood that all conditioned phenomena are by nature subject to decay, decline, disintegration, and destruction.
