Having done that, they looked towards the heavenly realms and went to the heavens. Then, the sons of the gods who had previously become swans, just as a merchant gains profit, a farmer reaps a harvest, a hero triumphs in battle, and a sick person is freed from all illness, by what fortune did they go to their own abodes with the fortune that came to the Blessed One? At that time, the monks, not sleeping at night or at dawn, remained diligently engaged in their practice. They saw a great light appear before the Blessed One. Having seen it, they were filled with doubt, and to dispel all doubt, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is the reason? Last night, did the lord of the Sahā world, Brahmā, or the lord of the gods, Indra, or the four guardians of the world come to behold the Blessed One?" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, it was not Brahmā, the lord of the Sahā world, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the four guardians of the world who came to see me. Monks, did you see the five hundred swans that King Prasenajit of Kosala sent here?" "Venerable One, we saw them." He said: "They were delighted with me, and having died, they were reborn in the excellent heaven of the Thirty-three (त्रयस्त्रिंशत्,trayastriṃśat,trayastriṃśat,Thirty-three). Last night, they came to me, and I taught them the Dharma, and having realized the truth, they returned to their own abodes." Then, the monks were filled with doubt, and to dispel all doubt, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable One, what deeds did the sons of the gods who had previously become swans perform to be born as swans? What deeds did they perform to be born in the heavens and realize the truth?" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, it was precisely because they themselves, in other past lives, had accumulated merit and possessed the necessary conditions, and like a hero crossing a river, they had done and accumulated those deeds that would not be devoured by obstacles. Therefore, who else would experience the deeds done and accumulated by the sons of the gods who had previously become swans? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realms of water, fire, or wind. Whether the deeds are virtuous or non-virtuous.

The deeds done and accumulated will only ripen into the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that have been taken. The deeds of sentient beings, even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas, will not be wasted. When the conditions gather and the time arrives, they will ripen into fruit. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, in this very fortunate kalpa, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, Guide of beings to be tamed, unsurpassed, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Light-Store, appeared in the world, dwelling and residing in the Deer Park at the Hermitage of the Rishis in the city of Varanasi. At that time, those who had gone forth from home and were lax in their training were born as geese. Those who pleased my mind were born as gods. Those who guarded the remaining precepts realized the truth. Monks, therefore, those whose actions are definitely dark, their ripening will also definitely be dark. Those whose actions are definitely white, their ripening will also definitely be white. Mixed actions, their ripening will also be mixed. Monks, therefore, abandon those actions that are definitely dark and mixed, and only dedicate yourselves to those actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Bhagavan had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and praised the words of the Bhagavan. The sixth chapter of the summary verses from the Hundred Jataka Tales, which includes Gambu, is completed. The seventh summary verse. The summary is: Golden light and fragrance, beautiful appearance and great strength, lotus eyes and drum sounds, son and sun and great hero. Golden light refers to the kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, helmsmen, gods, nagas, yakshas, goddesses, etc., towards the Buddha Bhagavan.
