With that wealth of the Blessed One, he returned to his own place. At that time, the monks, not sleeping at night and at dawn, were diligently engaged in exertion, and they saw a great light appearing in the presence of the Blessed One. Having seen it, they became doubtful, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is the reason? Last night, did Brahmā, the lord of the Sahā world, or Indra with a hundred eyes, or the four great kings, come to behold the Blessed One?" The Blessed One said to the monks: "It was not Brahmā, the lord of the Sahā world, or Indra with a hundred eyes, or the four great kings who came to behold me. But the son of the gods, Susthita, with five hundred attendants, came to behold me, and I taught him the Dharma, and he saw the truth and returned to his own place." Then those monks became doubtful, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable One, where did the son of the gods, Susthita, come from? And from what is the name derived?" The Blessed One said: "Monks, do you wish to hear?" They replied: "Venerable One, we wish to hear." He said: "Monks, listen well, pay close attention, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, in this very auspicious kalpa, when the life span of beings was twenty thousand years, the Tathāgata, Arhat, perfectly enlightened, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, unsurpassed charioteer of those to be tamed, incomparable teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Krakucchanda Buddha, appeared in the world. He dwelt in the Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana in the city of Vārāṇasī. Later, at one time, King Kṛkī went to behold the Blessed One and to pay homage. Then, at one time, two Brahmins went to Ṛṣipatana for some matter, and they saw that king with great royal wealth and great royal power. Then those two developed a desire for kingship. Those two asked a certain Upāsaka:

If one performs the duties of a Buddhist devotee, then all that he thinks and desires will be fulfilled, it is said. The devotee said: Whoever perfectly observes the eight precepts of fasting, all that he thinks and desires will be fulfilled. Then the two Brahmins took the eight precepts of fasting from the householder Water Top and observed them. One of them observed them perfectly. Then, after dying, he was born as the son of King Kṛkī, and his son was named Leghaketu, and after his father died, he was made king. The other one broke the precepts of fasting, and after dying, he was born into the realm of dragons. Seven times a day, gravel fell on him, leaving only bones. Then he thought to himself: What is the fruit of this? What is the ripening of this fruit? He thought, I am experiencing such suffering. Then he thought, Because I took the eight precepts of fasting but relaxed in my training, I am experiencing such suffering, while the one who took and observed them has obtained kingship. Again, he thought: Now I will also observe the eight precepts of fasting. Perhaps I will be liberated from the birth of a dragon. Then he transformed himself into the form of a Brahmin and came to the king. After arriving, he praised the king, saying: May you be victorious! May you live long! And he said: Great king, please grant me the eight precepts of fasting, please bestow upon me the eight precepts of fasting of the gods. If you do not grant them, the head of the god will split into seven pieces without fail, and having said this, he disappeared on the spot. Then the king was frightened and terrified, unhappy and with goosebumps, and he hung a vessel containing a golden vase on the top of the victory banner, and proclaimed throughout all my land: Whoever shows me the eight precepts of fasting, I will give him this golden vase. He will also be honored with great respect.

Thus it was proclaimed. Then, after a while, there was an old woman, a carpenter's daughter, who showed the king a pillar, saying, "In the past, my father always offered incense, fumigation, and flowers to this pillar. Please pull it out and take a look." Then the king commanded the long-serving attendants to pull out this pillar. When the king's close attendants pulled out the pillar, they found underneath it a scripture written on golden plates, containing the eight-branched fast, the five precepts of the lay vows, and the thirty-seven dharmas in harmony with the path to enlightenment. Then the king wrote and gave to that Naga a set of vows possessing the eight-branched fast. Twenty thousand hermits dwelling in the hermitage also manifested the thirty-seven dharmas in harmony with the path to enlightenment. That Naga also guarded the vows possessing the eight-branched fast, placed it on the ground, abandoned its body, and stayed there with its mouth open. Then it died, and together with five hundred attendants, was reborn in the beautiful heavenly realm of the Thirty-Three (Trayastrimsa). Monks, the fast originated from that event, and the name was also derived from it. The Blessed One spoke thus, and the monks rejoiced and praised the words spoken by the Blessed One. The story called "Swan" is as follows: The Buddha, the Blessed One, was honored by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, ship captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers, revered as a teacher, depicted in paintings, and offered to. The gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers all offered to and knew that the Buddha, the Blessed One, possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies. While dwelling in Shravasti, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, together with the monastic community of Shravaka monks
