And having closed the doors of evil destinies, and having opened the doors of heaven and liberation, and having placed me among gods and men, this kind of thing was not done for me by my father, nor was it done by my mother, nor was it done by the king, nor was it done by the gods, nor was it done by the assembly of family and relatives, nor was it done by the former teachers, nor was it done by the ascetics and Brahmins. Again he said: The path of evil destinies, full of many faults, extremely unbearable, is cut off by your power. The path to heaven, full of merit, is opened. I have also obtained the path to Nirvana. Today I have obtained the eye of abandoning sins, relying on you. I have crossed the ocean of suffering, and have obtained the peaceful state of the joy of the noble ones. The supreme among men, the lord, worshipped by men and gods, having abandoned the disease of birth, old age and death, difficult to see in a thousand existences, the Thuba (Sage), you are seen today to have results. Then the one with the hanging necklace became happy, prostrated and bowed to the two feet, and also circumambulated the one who overcomes enemies, and facing the world of the gods, went to the heavenly realm. Then, that son of the gods who was formerly a buffalo, just as a merchant gains profit, a farmer gains a harvest, a hero conquers in battle, and a sick person is freed from all diseases, with the wealth with which he came to the Blessed One, he returned to his own abode. Then those buffalo herders saw that great light. Having seen it, they became doubtful, and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Blessed One, who was it that came to the Blessed One last night, and was illuminated by the light of the gods? The Blessed One replied: That buffalo of yours, having become happy towards me, died and was born in the good heavenly realm of the Thirty-Three. Last night it came to me, and I taught it the Dharma, and it realized the truth, and then returned to its own abode. Then those buffalo herders became exceedingly amazed and astonished. Even though born in the animal realm, this one, having met the virtuous friend, the Blessed One, was born among the gods, and realized the truth, why do we

They thought they would not achieve anything special. Then, they satisfied the Buddha, the Bhagavan, along with the Sangha of Shravakas, with excellent food, and then they went forth in the presence of the Bhagavan. Through diligence, practice, and effort, they abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of Arhat. Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable one, what deeds did the son of the god who previously became a buffalo do to be born as a buffalo? What deeds did he do to be born in the realm of the gods and see the truth? What deeds did these buffalo herders do to become buffalo herders? What deeds did they do to go forth and directly realize the state of Arhat?" The Bhagavan said: "Monks, these very beings, in other previous lives, had accumulated merit and possessed the complete conditions. Like a dam bursting, they did and accumulated those deeds that would not be destroyed. How could others experience the deeds that they themselves did and accumulated? Monks, the deeds that are done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realms of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds that are done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. The deeds of sentient beings will not be lost even after hundreds of kalpas. When the accumulations are gathered and the time has come, they will ripen into their own fruit. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, in this very fortunate kalpa, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, Guide of beings to be tamed, unsurpassed, teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, named Light Protector (འོད་སྲུང་།), appeared in the world. He resided and dwelt in the Deer Park, the hermitage of the Rishis, in the city of Varanasi. At that time, when the monks were making determinations, a monk who held the three baskets, together with five hundred attendants, was making
