I have also attained the path of the past. Today, I have abandoned the eyes of sin, And attained perfect purity through you. I have crossed the ocean of suffering, And attained the peaceful state that pleases the noble ones. The supreme among humans, revered by humans and gods, Who has abandoned the suffering of birth, aging, and death, Who is difficult to see in the cycle of existence, O Sage, seeing you now is truly fruitful. Then, the one adorned with necklaces rejoiced, Prostrated and paid homage to the two feet, Circumambulated the Victorious One, And gazing at the heavenly realms, went to the celestial abode. Then, the goddess Shri, like a merchant making a profit, a farmer having a bountiful harvest, a warrior victorious in battle, and a sick person freed from all diseases, with the wealth that came to the Blessed One, returned to her own abode. The monks, in the evening and at dawn, Remained diligent, not sleeping, but striving, They saw a great light appear near the Blessed One. Having seen it, they became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: "Blessed One, what is this? Is it Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the Four Great Kings who have come to see the Blessed One?" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, it is not Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, nor Indra, the lord of the gods, nor the Four Great Kings who have come to see me, but the queen of King Bimbisāra, named Shri, who sacrificed her own life, remembering the qualities of the Buddha, and lit a row of lamps at the stupa of the Tathāgata's hair and nails. She was killed by the angry King Ajātasattu. She died with a joyful mind towards me and was reborn in the excellent heaven of the Thirty-Three. This evening, she came to me, and I taught her the Dharma, and she realized the truth, and then returned to her own abode." Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves in this way: Respect the teacher, regard him as a guru, regard him as an image, make offerings to the teacher. Respect the teacher, regard him as a guru, regard him as an image, make offerings to the teacher, and abide by this. Monks.

Beg, you should teach in this way. The Blessed One having spoken thus, those monks rejoiced and praised the Blessed One's words. 'Clothing' means that the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are honored, respected, regarded as teachers, depicted in paintings, and offered to by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace retinues, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, who are known and offered to by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, are endowed with great merit and have obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicines, and medical supplies. Together with the monastic community of hearers, he was dwelling in Anathapindika's Grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti. Then, when Anathapindika offered Jeta's Grove to the monastic community of monks including the Buddha, and eventually offered a hundred million kotis of gold coins to the Blessed One's teachings, the thought arose in his mind: What is so amazing about me giving alms and performing meritorious deeds? In order to benefit the poor, I should gather the faith of the people living in Shravasti and make offerings to the Blessed One and his community of hearers. By doing so, I will be able to benefit many beings and also accumulate a great deal of merit. Then, Anathapindika told the king what he had thought, and the king also proclaimed throughout Shravasti: O people of the palace retinue living in Shravasti, listen! In seven days from now, Anathapindika, for the sake of the Tathagata's hearers, will ride an elephant, intending to gather faith. How much do you each intend to give?

He commanded, "Release all of those!" Then, after a while, when seven days had passed, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada rode an elephant and set out to gather faith for the sake of the Buddha's Śrāvakas. There, whatever and however much people possessed, they gave that much. Some gave neck ornaments, some gave bracelets, some gave armlets, some gave gold necklaces, some gave finger rings, some gave pearl necklaces, some gave gold, some gave silver, some even gave an eighth of a measure of barley. That householder also accepted it in order to benefit others. Then, after a while, a very poor woman, having endured hardship, found a piece of cloth after three months. She put on that cloth and went into the street. She saw the householder Anāthapiṇḍada blowing a conch and beating a round drum, coming from afar. She asked a layperson, "This householder is rich and has much wealth and enjoyment, and even sees the treasures hidden under the ground. Why does he beg and wander from other people's houses?" That layperson said, "It is for the benefit of others, for the sake of those who cannot offer food to the Blessed One and the Saṅgha of Śrāvakas. He acts for their benefit, gathering as much as possible and then offering it to the Blessed One." Then, a thought arose in that woman's mind, "Ah, I am truly without merit! I alone do not have the power to offer food to the Blessed One and the Saṅgha of Śrāvakas. I must give him a little something." Then, she looked to see what she had, but she saw nothing other than that piece of cloth. She thought, "If I stand here and give away this cloth, I will be naked. I will go to the roof and throw the cloth away!" Then, she went to the roof and took off the cloth from her body, throwing it onto the householder Anāthapiṇḍada. That householder also caught it. This (cloth) from the roof...
