He said to the teacher, "I am weary of home, and I have renounced it to seek the truth, but now I am unhappy and want to kill myself." When Mahāmaudgalyāyana heard him say this, he thought, "If I do not threaten him with the fear of birth and death, then renunciation will be meaningless." So he said to him, "Hold tightly to the edge of my robe and do not let go." Then he rose into the sky, like the wind blowing away dust, and like holding a single hair in his hand by means of miraculous power, he departed in this way. Furthermore, like a hawk carrying a fledgling, Mahāmaudgalyāyana rose into the sky by means of miraculous power, and as quickly as a man extends and retracts his arm, he arrived at the seashore. On that seashore was the corpse of a woman who had just died, exceedingly beautiful, virtuous, with a good complexion, and endowed with marks. A snake entered her mouth and came out of her nose; it entered her eyes and came out of her ears. Mahāmaudgalyāyana carefully observed this. Then the monk Guṇasena asked, "Who is this woman so beautiful and endowed with marks?" Mahāmaudgalyāyana said, "When the time is right, I will show you." Then they went on, and they saw a woman who had set up a large copper pot. She had filled the pot with water and lit a great fire underneath it, so that the water was boiling. She took off her clothes and entered the pot, and immediately all her hair and fur fell off, and her flesh was cooked. Her bones also fell apart, and when the water was poured out, the bones came out with it. Those bones were then blown away by the wind, and immediately they turned into a person, who then took the flesh out of the pot and ate it. The monk Guṇasena was frightened and his hair stood on end. He asked, "Teacher, who is this person who is eating his own flesh?" Mahāmaudgalyāyana said, "When the time is right, I will show you." Then they went on, and they saw a large tree, and between its leaves and branches there was not even a space the size of the tip of a needle, for it was being eaten by many worms.
