Who can definitively say, "This one is not allowed to be ordained"? The householder reported: "Venerable One, Shariputra, the most wise among the retinue of the Wheel-Turning King of Dharma, the great guide of the world beneath the Buddha, has not permitted me to be ordained into the teachings." Then, the Bhagavan, with great compassion, just as parents speak sweet words to a very devoted child, encouraged the householder Shri Jata and spoke these words: "Do not grieve, I will ordain you. Shariputra has not practiced diligent effort for three countless eons, nor has he accumulated merit for a hundred eons. Shariputra also has not, in all lifetimes, given away with extreme difficulty, such as cutting off his head, gouging out his eyes, and giving away bones, limbs, flesh, blood, skin, arms, hands, ears, and nose. Shariputra has not given his body to a tigress, jumped into a pit of fire, hammered a thousand iron nails into his body, or lit a thousand butter lamps on his body. Shariputra has not given away countries, cities, wives, children, male and female servants, elephants, horses, and the seven precious jewels. Shariputra has not, in the first countless eon, paid homage to eighty-eight thousand Buddhas, in the intermediate countless eon, paid homage to ninety-nine thousand Buddhas, and in the final countless eon, paid homage to ten thousand Buddhas, and having ordained, has not perfected the perfection of discipline. If Shariputra is not master of the Dharma, why does he say that this one is not of the lineage of ordination? Only I am master of the Dharma, uplifted by the six perfections, wearing the armor of patience, seated on the vajra seat under the Bodhi tree, having subdued all the armies of Mara, having attained perfect enlightenment, there is no one equal to me. Therefore, follow me, I will ordain you." Thus, the Bhagavan encouraged him with various skillful means, so that all his sorrows subsided and great joy arose.

Confidence arose in him, and he went to the monastery as if following the Buddha. Then, the Blessed One said to Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "Ordain this householder." Why? Because beings are tamed by whatever action they are compatible with; those compatible with the Buddha cannot be tamed by others. Those compatible with others are not tamed by the Buddha either. For example, those compatible with Śāriputra cannot be tamed by Maudgalyāyana, Kāśyapa, Aniruddha, Rāhula, or any other attendant. Likewise, whoever is compatible with whom, they cannot be tamed by others. At that time, Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought, "This householder is old and frail, unable to learn recitation, unable to meditate, unable to do the work of the sangha, and has declined from the three activities." However, the King of Dharma, the Blessed One, commanded him to be ordained, so he thought, "It is impossible to go against the Dharma," and had him ordained and fully ordained as a monk. This person had also planted the seed of liberation in a previous life. Like being caught by the iron hook of Dharma, like a fish caught by a cormorant and not eaten by demons but returning, he also planted the seed of liberation. He also accumulated a collection of merit, so he exerted himself day and night, became accustomed to reading and reciting, and fully understood and realized the sutras, the vinaya, and the abhidharma. However, because of old age and frailty, he was unable to properly serve, respect, greet, and send off, nor could he speak frankly to his teacher or prostrate. The young monks, those who had previously ordained and were of high rank, said, "This old monk relies on recitation, reading, and learning, and does not respect us," so they constantly harmed him. Then, the old monk thought to himself: "When I was at home, I was tormented by my wife and son. Now that I have ordained, I have become so unrestrained. Now I am being tormented by these young monks. What evil did I commit in the past that I am tormented by such suffering? I think it would be better for me to die now." Thinking this, he went to the bank of a great river flowing beside that grove, took off his monastic robes, and...

Having hung the branch, knelt on the ground, and shed tears, he made this vow: "I am not abandoning the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, but only giving up this body. By the merit of my giving, keeping vows, practicing diligence, and reciting the sutras, may I, upon leaving this body, be born into a powerful, wealthy, and prosperous family with harmonious relatives. May I not create obstacles to entering the virtuous Dharma, may I always encounter the Three Jewels, may I be ordained and diligently practice the Dharma, may I meet wise teachers and also demonstrate the attainment of Nirvana." He intended to jump into the river where the water flowed swiftly, deeply, swirling, and violently. At that time, the son of Datagala, with his divine eye, wondered, "What is my old attendant doing now?" Seeing his attendant jump into the water, he did not go to the water but rescued him with his miraculous power and placed him on the bank, asking, "Son of Dharma, what are you doing?" The old man, ashamed and embarrassed, thought, "How should I answer? If I lie and deceive the teacher, deceiving the teacher will cause me to be born in all lifetimes as a disabled person without a tongue. Even if I lie, the teacher, possessing clairvoyance, will know it. Whoever in this world possesses the wisdom of the wise, is naturally upright, and has no deceit, will be revered by the gods. One who possesses the wisdom of the wise but has deceit cannot be a teacher to others and will be revered by people. If one has no wisdom but also no deceit and is upright, although unable to benefit others, he can benefit himself. If one is foolish and ignorant and also has deceit, he is the enemy of all, and whatever he says, people will say, 'This is lying, this is deceiving.' Even if he speaks the truth, no one will believe him. Therefore, it is not appropriate for me to deceive the teacher. I will not lie, I will tell the truth," he thought.
