Chapter Fifteen: Praising the Virtues of Ordination Chapter Fifteen: Praising the Virtues of Ordination Whoever ordains, their merit is exceedingly great. Whether it be my son, daughter, or any slave, if they are allowed to ordain, or if one ordains oneself, their merit is immeasurable. The merit of giving alms can be enjoyed for up to ten lifetimes, surpassing being born a thousand times as a god in the six desire realms. If one person ordains or ordains oneself, this merit is far greater than the former. Why is that? Because the merit of giving alms has an end, but the merit of ordination is immeasurable and endless. Furthermore, the merit of keeping vows can lead to becoming a hermit with five kinds of clairvoyance and experiencing heavenly bliss up to the realm of Brahma. However, the merit of ordaining in the Buddha's teachings is inconceivable, and the merit will never be exhausted until Nirvana. If someone were to build a stupa made of seven precious jewels, reaching a height of thirty-three (a Tibetan unit of height), the merit would not equal the merit of ordination. Why is that? Because a stupa of seven precious jewels can be destroyed by foolish and wicked people, but the merit of ordination cannot be destroyed. If one desires virtuous Dharma, there is no Dharma more supreme than the Buddha's Dharma. For example, a skilled doctor opens the eyes of a hundred blind people, enabling them to see all at once. Or, a hundred people face the misfortune of having their eyes gouged out, and a powerful person saves them from this fate. The merit of these two people is immeasurable, but it still does not equal the merit of helping others to ordain or ordaining oneself. Why is that? Because these two people give others eyes, merely allowing them to see worldly benefits and happiness, and the nature of the physical eye is perishable. If one helps others to ordain or ordains oneself, by guiding and leading each other, the realm of sentient beings can reach kalpas.

It transforms into the eye of unsurpassed wisdom, and the nature of the eye of wisdom will not perish even until the end of the kalpa. With its merit, one experiences inexhaustible happiness and enjoyment among gods and humans, experiencing it as desired, and ultimately attaining perfect enlightenment. Why is that? Because the Dharma of ordination eliminates the retinue of demons and continues the lineage of the Buddha. It eliminates sinful and unwholesome dharmas and increases wholesome dharmas. It eliminates the stains of wrongdoing and increases the karma of unsurpassed merit. Therefore, the Bhagavan said that the merit of ordination is higher than Mount Meru, deeper than the ocean, and wider than the sky. If someone creates obstacles and hindrances to ordination, and it does not turn out as desired, that is an extremely serious offense. For example, just as a person who goes into the darkness cannot see anything, the ripening of that person's sins is the same, and they will fall into the hell of sentient beings in the extremely imperceptible darkness, the great darkness. For example, just as all rivers and drops of water flow into the ocean, the ripening of that person's sins is the same, and all faults gather on their body. For example, just as Mount Meru is burned completely without residue when the fire of the end of the kalpa arises, so too will they be burned by the fire of the hell of sentient beings, and the remaining residue will be the same. Or allowing others to ordain, or if oneself ordains, then their merit is extremely great. Ordination is using the completely pure water of the Sutras to wash away all the stains of pervasive afflictions, completely eliminating the suffering of samsara, and it will become the cause of nirvana. With the feet of the Vinaya, one walks on the ground of completely pure morality, and with the eyes of the Abhidharma, one sees the virtues and sins of the world, and as desired, one walks on the eightfold noble path, and will reach the city of nirvana. Therefore, whether an old person or a young person ordains, or allows others to ordain, or if oneself ordains, then their merit is supremely great. At that time, the Bhagavan was in Rajagriha, Kalandaka
