Residing in the Radiant Grove. At that time, in the city of Rajagriha, there was a householder named Shri Jata, who was a hundred years old. He heard that the merits of ordination were immeasurable, and he thought to himself, "Why shouldn't I renounce and join the Buddha's teachings?" So he said to his wife, son, and servants, "I am going to renounce." Because the man was old and frail, all the people in his household were disheartened, thinking, "He is useless now." When they heard him say that he was going to renounce, they were delighted and said, "The time has come for him to leave quickly." Then, that householder left his home and went to the Radiant Grove to request the Blessed One to allow him to renounce. When he arrived at the Radiant Grove, he asked the monks, "Where does the Buddha, the Blessed One, the Great Compassionate One, who extensively performs deeds for the benefit of gods and humans, reside?" The monks replied, "The Buddha, the Blessed One, is wandering for the benefit of many beings and has gone elsewhere." The householder then asked the monks, "Who among the Buddha, the Great Teacher's disciples, is the most wise and intelligent?" The monks pointed and said, "It is the Venerable Shariputra." The old man, leaning on his staff, went to where Shariputra was. Upon arriving, he dropped his staff, prostrated, and said, "Venerable, please grant me ordination." Venerable Shariputra considered that this householder was old and would be unable to perform the three tasks of learning, meditation, and monastic duties, and he thought, "He is not capable." Therefore, he said, "Go back! You are old and have missed the time. It is not permissible for you to renounce." Then, he went in succession to the great Kashyapa, Upali, Anuruddha, and other Arhats to make his request. All those Arhats asked him, "Have you not made a request to anyone before?" He replied, "I made a request to Venerable Shariputra before." They asked, "What did he say?" He said, "He said that I am old and have missed the time, so it is not permissible for me to renounce." Then, those monks said, "If even Shariputra, such a wise and intelligent sage, does not allow it,

We are also the same, not allowed. For example, a skilled doctor examines a patient and if he abandons him without treatment, the other small doctors will not treat him either, because they know that this person definitely has the signs of death. If even Shariputra, who is wise, does not allow it, other monks are also the same, not allowed, so it is proclaimed. That householder, because the monks did not allow him to be ordained, came out of the Light Garden and sat on the doorstep, crying loudly and lamenting. I have not committed any great sins since I was born, why am I not allowed to be ordained? People like Uli who came from executioners, people like those who wipe away vomit and discard filth, people like Angulimala who killed countless people, people like Asika who are fierce and barbaric, they can all be ordained, what sins do I have that I am not allowed to be ordained? After saying this, the Blessed One went to him and manifested his body, shining brightly with light, adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks, appearing like the seven-jeweled banner of Indra, the lord of the gods, and said to the householder Auspicious Birth: Why are you crying? At that time, that householder heard the Buddha's voice like the voice of Brahma, and was very happy, as happy as a son seeing his mother, prostrated with his five limbs on the ground, and prostrated to the Buddha, saying: Among sentient beings, even murderers, evildoers, liars, and slanderers can be ordained, what sins do I have that I am not allowed to be ordained in the Buddha's teachings? All the people in my family are tired of me because I am old and weak, and I am no longer useful. If the Buddha's teachings do not allow me to be ordained, even if I return home, no one will welcome me, they will not let me into the house, I have nowhere to go, and I will surely lose my life today. Then, the Blessed One said to the householder Auspicious Birth: Raising your hand in the sky, this is ordination.
