Thus they spoke to the Bhagavan. "Bhagavan, the qualities of the Bhagavan are inconceivable. These beggars are of very low and vile birth in this land. Here, they have obtained the happiness of this world and also found long-term benefit. The Bhagavan has come into the world solely for these purposes. Furthermore, Bhagavan, what roots of virtue did these beggars previously guard, and what meritorious deeds did they diligently perform, that they met with the Bhagavan and became liberated? What sins did they commit that they were born as beggars from the beginning and became poor and destitute?" The Bhagavan spoke to Prince Jeta: "In the past, beyond countless, immeasurable, inconceivable eons, in this Jambudvipa, there was a city called 'ཌ', and there was a mountain called 'The Coming of the Righteous Ascetic'. Many Pratyekabuddhas used to reside there. Even if a Buddha did not appear in the world, the Pratyekabuddhas would reside there. Even if there were no Pratyekabuddhas on that mountain, there would be ascetics with the five superknowledges residing there. At that time, there were two thousand ascetics residing there. Later, fortune-tellers prophesied that there would be no rain for twelve years. At that time, in that land, there was a wealthy householder, rich and prosperous, named Damayaka. He went to Damayaka and said, 'Do we, these thousand ordained ascetics, have food and drink for twelve years?' He said, 'I have it. Please, noble ones, do not depart, but remain here.' Then, another thousand ascetics came and said to Damayaka, 'We need food and drink for twelve years.' The householder asked the one guarding the storehouse, 'Is there enough sustenance for these noble ones for twelve years?' The storehouse guardian replied, 'There is enough.' Then, that householder appointed five hundred workers to prepare food for the two thousand ascetics and had them prepare alms. At that time, the workers, while preparing the food for the alms, became weary after a long time and said, 'We are constantly afflicted in this way because of these beggars.'

Why did he say that? At that time, that householder appointed a person to always invite the holy ones to the alms-round on time. The inviter had a dog, and that dog always followed the inviter. One day, the inviter forgot. At the time for the alms-round, the dog went to those holy ones, barked loudly. The holy ones, hearing the dog bark, knew that the time for the alms-round had arrived, and went for alms. The next day, after the holy ones had finished their alms-round, they said to the householder: Householder, now it will rain, let the farmers go to till the fields! The householder also let the farmers go to till the fields, and they planted barley, wheat, and many grains. Then, the next day, all the sown grains grew in gourds, and the householder was amazed, and said to the holy ones: Will these not become meaningless? The holy ones said: They will not become meaningless, in time there will be rain and so on, go to work! Not long after, all the gourds grew large, and when they were cut open and looked at, whatever was sown, those things grew inside the gourds. The householder was very happy, and the granaries were filled. The five hundred laborers also saw these things, and felt remorse, saying: We have slandered the holy one with evil words! They confessed: May we also meet the holy one in the future, and be liberated! They made a prayer. These five hundred beggars, because they spoke evil words, were always beggars for five hundred lifetimes. Because they confessed and made a prayer, they met me and reached the end of samsara. Prince, this should be understood. At that time, that wealthy householder, was me. The one who guarded the treasury, was Prince Victorious Army. The person who invited every day, was King Udayana. At that time, that dog, was the householder Melodious Voice. Because of this, in all lifetimes, his voice was very melodious. That's it.

The five hundred people who acted in the past life are these five hundred Arhats. After the Blessed One spoke thus, some of the many retinues attained the first fruit up to the fourth fruit. Some aroused the unsurpassed Bodhicitta and rejoiced and were delighted with what the Blessed One said. The thirty-fourth chapter, the Householder Reconciliation Chapter, is completed. Thirty-fifth, the King's Eye-Opening Chapter. Tenth fascicle. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden. He taught the Dharma to many people. At that time, all the people in the city went to listen to the Dharma, and a blind Brahmin in that city was sitting on the road. When he saw many people passing by, he asked, "Where are you going in such a hurry?" The people said, "Haven't you heard that the Tathagata has appeared in the world and is now residing in this place teaching the Dharma? It is very difficult for the Tathagata to appear in the world and meet him, so we are going to listen to the Dharma from the Buddha." That Brahmin was very proficient in eight kinds of voices, and as soon as he made a sound, he could know his power and lifespan. What are the eight? The voice like a sparrow, the voice like a crow, the shrill voice, the voice like an elephant, the sound of a drum, the sound of a dragon, the sound of a bell, and the sound of Brahma. Speaking like the voice of a sparrow is a person who has no shame and does not know gratitude. Speaking like the voice of a crow is a person who is angry and violent, likes to kill, and has no compassion. The shrill voice is when a man speaks in a woman's voice, and a woman speaks in a man's voice, which is a person who has no power, is poor, and is lowly. Speaking like the voice of an elephant is a person who is naturally upright and thinks of helping virtuous friends. Speaking like the sound of a drum is a person who is good at speaking, quick-witted, has a strong memory, and is relied upon by the king. Speaking like the sound of a dragon is a person who has wisdom and is proficient in the Dharma. Speaking like the sound of a bell is a person who is rich, has enjoyment, and possesses gold.
