The Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish The Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish Chapter One: Miscellaneous Parables The Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish, Volume One, Chapter on Miscellaneous Parables. Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the victorious center of the land of Magadha, having attained perfect enlightenment. Not long after, he thought to himself: "These sentient beings have been deluded by inverted views for a long time, and it is very difficult to teach and subdue them. Even if I remain in the world, there is no benefit. Therefore, it is better to completely enter into nirvana without remainder." As soon as this thought arose, the gods of the Brahma realm knew and understood the Blessed One's intention. They descended from the sky and arrived at the place where the Blessed One was. Upon arriving, they bowed their heads to the Blessed One's feet, joined their palms, and requested and urged the Blessed One to turn the wheel of Dharma. To this, the Blessed One said: "Gods of the Brahma realm, these sentient beings are completely stained by the impurity of wrongdoing, attached to worldly pleasures, and without a mind endowed with wisdom. Even if I remain in the world, it will be meaningless. It is better to enter nirvana." Then, the gods of the Brahma realm again requested the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, the ocean of Dharma is completely full, the banner of Dharma is erected, and now is the time to teach and subdue. There are also many sentient beings who will be liberated from this. Why does the Blessed One consider entering nirvana? Do not abandon the protector and refuge of these extremely distressed beings. In the past, countless eons ago, the Blessed One sought to hear for the benefit of sentient beings. Even for the sake of a single small verse, you gave up your own body, wife, sons, and daughters. Why abandon these who have no protector? (missing page here) In the distant past, in this Jambudvipa, there was a great king named Excellent Color, who ruled this world.

It happened that the king possessed eighty-four thousand small kingdoms. Within sixty great continents, he also possessed eighty thousand cities. That king had twenty thousand consorts and ten thousand great ministers. That king, with his pure appearance and unparalleled power and might, possessed wealth, happiness, abundant harvests, and a multitude of people. He thought to himself: 'I have benefited all beings with jewels and possessions, but I have not benefited them with the sacred Dharma. These will become my faults. I must seek the sacred Dharma and liberate all beings.' Having thought this, he decreed: 'If anyone on this Jambudvipa possesses the sacred Dharma, please tell me, and I will unhesitatingly grant them whatever they desire.' But he could not find anyone who could tell him. At that time, the king was distressed and troubled by sorrow, and unhappy. A man named 'Resting One' heard this and, in order to awaken him, thought, 'I will transform myself into a yaksha, whose color is very blue, black, with eyes as red as blood, teeth protruding upwards, hair standing on end, flames burning from his mouth, and I will go to the gate of the palace and say: "Whoever wishes to hear the Dharma, listen to me."' When the king heard these words, he was overjoyed and welcomed the yaksha, bowed with his head, placed him on a high seat, and gathered his ministers and many attendants, surrounding him so that they could listen to the Dharma. At that time, the yaksha said to the king: 'O king, it is very difficult to hear the Dharma. If you wish to hear the Dharma, this alone is not enough.' After saying this, The king folded his palms and said to him: 'Whatever you desire, I will give it all to you without hesitation.' Then, the yaksha said to the king: 'O king, let me eat the consort and son you cherish most, and I will impart the sacred Dharma to you.' At that time, that great king offered his most cherished consort and his best son to the

The giver ate in the midst of many attendants, in full view of everyone. At that time, the ministers of that king, seeing what had happened, cried out in sorrow and rolled on the ground, pleading, 'Great king, please stop such an unreasonable act!' However, that king was so steadfast in seeking the sacred Dharma that he could not be dissuaded. At that time, that yaksha, having eaten the king's queen and prince, spoke this verse: 'All conditioned things are impermanent; as much as there is birth, there is suffering; the five aggregates are empty because they are without characteristics; there is no self and no belonging to self.' Having spoken this verse, the king was delighted and rejoiced, and not even a hair's breadth of regret arose in him. Then, having written it down, he proclaimed it throughout the entire Jambudvipa (Southern Continent), and had everyone learn it. After that, the one who gives rest (name of the Yaksha) transformed back into his own body and praised, saying, 'Excellent! Wonderful and marvelous!' And he praised and extolled, and the king's queen and prince were as before, without any harm. At that time, that king was the Buddha. The Blessed One said, 'In the past, I also endured such hardships for the sake of the Dharma, and now I will completely abandon many sentient beings and pass into Nirvana.' The Blessed One also said, 'In the past, beyond countless eons, in this Jambudvipa, there was a great king named Kana Shini Pali who ruled over many small kingdoms, possessing eighty-four thousand cities, twenty thousand queens and palace women, and ten thousand great ministers.' That king was exceedingly compassionate, and he became like a father and mother to many beings, including people. At that time, that king thought to himself, 'I am also the leader of many beings, and these beings trust and like me, so I should benefit all with the treasure of the sacred Dharma.' Therefore, he ordered a minister to post notices everywhere, 'Whoever possesses the sacred Dharma, tell me, and I will give whatever they desire, as they wish.' At that time, a Brahmin named Leu Duji came to the gate of the palace.
