saying that a thousand iron nails would be hammered into his body. When the ministers and many people heard this, they all gathered before the king and pleaded, saying: "We, the people dwelling in all four directions, enjoy happiness and well-being individually through the king's merits and kindness. Great king, now for our sake, we beseech you, please do not let a thousand iron nails be hammered into your body." At that time, the queen, the palace attendants, the regent, the prince, and all the ministers also pleaded, saying: "Great king, please have compassion on us, it is not right to end your life for the sake of one person and abandon all your subjects." To this, the king said: "For a long time, I have wasted countless bodies in samsara. Sometimes, due to desire, hatred, and ignorance, this body was killed, and the accumulated white bones are higher than Mount Meru. The blood that flowed from severed heads is greater than the five great rivers. The tears of weeping are more than the four great oceans. In this way, I have wasted my life in various ways, but not once was it for the sake of the Dharma. Now I will hammer in the nails and accomplish Buddhahood. Later, if I attain complete enlightenment and cut off your diseases of all afflictions with the sword of wisdom, why do you obstruct my mind of enlightenment?" After speaking, the many attendants were all silent. Then the king said to the Brahmin: "Great teacher, please be compassionate, first proclaim the Dharma, and then after the Dharma, strike me with iron nails. If I end my life, I will not hear the Dharma." After speaking, that Brahmin said in verse: "All conditioned things are impermanent, all births are accompanied by suffering, all phenomena are empty and without a master, my self is also unobtainable." After speaking this verse, he hammered a thousand iron nails into his body. At that time, the petty kings, ministers, and many attendants, seeing that it had become like that, collapsed to the ground like a great mountain falling, weeping and unable to remember anything, falling to the ground. At that time, heaven and earth all

shook. The gods of the desire realm and the form realm were amazed, and all descended from the sky and came to that Bodhisattva. Seeing that he was enduring such great suffering with his body for the sake of the Dharma, they all wept, tears falling like rain, and offered celestial flowers. At that time, Indra, the king of the gods, came to where he was and said: Great King, you are so diligent and do not care about suffering. Is this for the sake of the Dharma? Or for Indra? Or do you want to be a Chakravartin? Or the King of Demons? Brahma? Or Mahadeva? The king replied: What I have done is not to enjoy the happiness of the three realms, but to attain Buddhahood with immeasurable merit. Indra said: I see that the king's body is trembling and unbearable. Saying these words and saying that there is no regret, how can this be believed? The king said: If what I say is true and there is no regret in my heart, then may my body be restored to its original state without wounds. As soon as he spoke, his body was restored to its original state, and the gods and humans rejoiced and praised him. At that time, in order to save many beings, he sought the Dharma. The Bhagavan is the complete ocean of Dharma and possesses immeasurable qualities. Why did he abandon so many beings and intend to pass into Nirvana without teaching the Dharma? Bhagavan, in the past, beyond immeasurable and countless kalpas, in this Jambudvipa, there was a great king named Brahma Deva, and there was a crown prince named Damagama. That prince was very fond of and delighted in the Holy Dharma, and searched for the Holy Dharma everywhere but could not find it. He was distressed by sadness and became depressed. At that time, Indra, the king of the gods, understood his thoughts very well, and transformed himself into a Brahmin and came to the gate of the king's palace, saying: I have the Holy Dharma and can show it to you. When the prince heard this, he greeted him from outside.
