of conduct. As soon as he spoke this verse, he jumped into the pit of fire. At that moment, Indra and King Brahma each grabbed one of his hands and said this: 'All the beings of Jambudvipa are free from unease because of the kindness of you, the king. Now, if you jump into the pit of fire, it will be like the parents of all the subjects passing away. Why do you abandon all beings and jump into the pit of fire?' After saying this, the prince looked at the king of the gods and the many attendants and said: 'Do not do anything that would hinder me from generating the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment.' After saying this, everyone was silent. Immediately, he jumped into the pit of fire. At that time, the earth and sky shook violently. The gods in the sky also cried, and tears fell like rain. The pit of fire also turned into a pool of flowers. The prince also sat on top of a lotus. All the gods rained down flowers, submerging up to their knees. At that time, at that time, King Brahma was King Suddhodana. At that time, at that time, his mother was the goddess Maya. At that time, at that time, the prince regent was the Bhagavan. Bhagavan, at that time, at that time, in order to save many beings, he sought the Dharma. Now that it has become completely perfect, why do you not rain down the rain of Dharma on the many sentient beings who are in extreme suffering, but instead consider passing into nirvana? Bhagavan, furthermore, beyond countless immeasurable eons in the past, at that time, at that time, in this city of Varanasi, there lived five hundred hermits. Those hermits wandered everywhere, delighting in learning and practicing the sacred Dharma, proclaiming: 'Whoever has the sacred Dharma, tell me, and I will give you whatever you desire and serve you.' At that time, a Brahmin came there and said to him: 'I have the sacred Dharma, and if you want to hear it, I will teach it.' When the hermit heard this, he joined his palms and said: 'Out of compassion for me, please teach the sacred Dharma.' The Brahmin said: 'Learn the Dharma.'

And it is also very difficult, because one learns the Dharma by experiencing much suffering. It is not reasonable to want to hear the Dharma just because of this. If you sincerely want to hear it, do as I say. The hermit said: I will not disobey the teachings of the great teacher. After saying this, (the Brahmin) said to him: If your skin is peeled off and made into paper, your bones are made into pens, and your blood is made into ink, and you use them to write the Dharma that I teach, then I will teach you the Dharma. After saying this, that hermit, hearing these words, was overjoyed, and in order to honor the teachings of the Tathagata, he peeled off his skin and made it into paper, made his bones into pens, and his blood into ink, saying: The time has come, please speak quickly. The Brahmin spoke these verses: Restrain bodily actions well, do not kill, steal, or commit adultery, do not speak divisive words, lies, harsh words, or idle chatter. Do not be attached to desires, and have no hatred in your heart, abandon all evil views, this is the conduct of a Bodhisattva. As soon as these verses were spoken, they were written down and proclaimed throughout Jambudvipa, so that everyone would learn them and strive to do as they were taught. The Blessed One, at that time, at that moment, did not regret seeking the Dharma for the sake of many sentient beings, so why now not teach the Dharma, but completely abandon everything and want to enter Nirvana? Blessed One, furthermore, in the past, beyond countless immeasurable eons, in this Jambudvipa there appeared a king named Shibi, and the palace where the king resided was called Devabhrta, possessing wealth, happiness, good harvests, and immeasurable enjoyment. At that time, the king ruled this Jambudvipa, possessing eighty-four thousand small kingdoms, and within sixty thousand regions, there were eight hundred thousand cities, twenty thousand consorts and palace women, about five hundred princes, and ten thousand great ministers.

I practice, filled with love and compassion for all beings. At that time, Indra, the lord of the gods, lost the five qualities of his body and was nearing the end of his life, so he was very unhappy. Vishvakarman saw him grieving and asked Indra why he was so sad and unhappy. Indra said: I am nearing the end of my life, and the signs of death have already appeared. The Buddha's teachings in this world will decline, and the Bodhisattvas will no longer reside in the world. I do not know who to turn to for refuge, so I am grieving. Vishvakarman said: Lord of the gods, in Jambudvipa there is a great king named Shibi, who practices the conduct of a Bodhisattva. He is very steadfast in his devotion to his chosen deity and diligently practices, so he will surely attain enlightenment. If you seek refuge in him, he will surely become your support and free you from obstacles. Indra said: If he is a Bodhisattva, he should be tested first before seeking help. You transform into a pigeon, and I will transform into a hawk, and quickly chase after you. Go to where the king is, seek refuge and test him to see if he is false or true. Vishvakarman said: Lord of the gods, it is not appropriate to harm a great Bodhisattva, to offer meat as a sacrifice, or to torment him with such difficult things. After saying this, Indra, the lord of the gods, spoke these verses: I have no ill intentions towards him, I will test him like gold and make him manifest. If you want to know the truth, you should test the Bodhisattva. After saying these verses, Vishvakarman transformed into a pigeon, and Indra transformed into a hawk, chasing after the pigeon, as if about to catch it. The pigeon was terrified and hid under the king's arm, begging the king for refuge. The hawk also quickly arrived and stood in front of the palace, saying to the king: This pigeon is my food, it has run to you, please quickly return it to me.
