So it was named so-and-so, and entrusted to a wet nurse to be raised. Later, the two young brothers grew up, and the two brothers went to the sea to collect treasures. Each of them found five hundred attendants and friends, and then set out on the road. Because the road was long, before they had reached a place seven days away, their provisions ran out and they were on the verge of death. The well-seeking one and the merchant friends were all distressed, and they all looked up and prayed, making offerings to the gods. Then, in that desolate wilderness, they saw a good, flourishing tree from afar. Everyone came to the foot of the tree, and there was also a good spring at the foot of the tree. The merchants drank from the spring and said, "This is a sign that we have made offerings to the gods!" As they said this, the gods appeared and said, "Cut off a branch of this tree, and everything you desire will appear." Then they cut off one branch, and a delicious drink appeared. Then they cut off another branch, and all kinds of food with a hundred flavors appeared, and they all ate their fill. Then they cut off another branch, and all kinds of clothes appeared. Then they cut off another branch, and all kinds of precious jewels appeared, filling all the loads. Then the ill-seeking one and all the others arrived there, and seeing that the previous ones had cut branches and obtained loads of various jewels, they thought to themselves: "If these previous ones can obtain enough jewels from the branches, then if we dig up the roots of this tree, we will obtain even more various jewels." Thinking this, they planned to dig up the roots of the tree. Then the well-seeking one was displeased and said, "We were poor and on the verge of death, and this tree saved our lives, so do not cut down this tree." Although he said this, the ill-seeking one did not listen and cut down the roots of the tree. Then the well-seeking one did not want to see it, and left with his loads. From the roots of the tree, five hundred ogres appeared and devoured the ill-seeking one and all the merchants. Venerable Ananda, the well-seeking one at that time was none other than myself now. His father was none other than my father, Śuddhodana, now. His mother was none other than my mother, Maya, now. The ill-seeking one was none other than Devadatta now. Venerable Ananda, Devadatta now only seeks to harm me.

Not only that, for the sake of fame and gain, he has harmed me in all lifetimes. Although I have taught the beneficial Dharma and benefited him, Devadatta still regards me as an enemy. After the Blessed One said this, the many attendants rejoiced and were delighted. The chapter on seeking good and seeking evil, the thirty-second chapter. The thirty-third chapter, the chapter on Prince Good Meaning. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Rajagriha on Vulture Peak Mountain, together with a large community of monks. At that time, the Venerable Ananda thought: Devadatta, by various means, intends to harm the Thus-Gone One, but the Thus-Gone One regards Devadatta and Rahula as no different, and always sees him with compassion. Then he asked the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to Ananda: Devadatta has not only harmed me at this time, but in other lifetimes he has also harbored thoughts of harming me. The monks were in doubt, and Ananda asked the Blessed One: How did this Devadatta harm the Blessed One in other lifetimes? The Blessed One said to Ananda: In the past, beyond countless, immeasurable, inconceivable eons, in this Jambudvipa there was a king named Precious Armor, who ruled five hundred small kingdoms. He had five hundred consorts and palace women, but no children. He prayed to all the gods, including the gods of the sun and moon, but after many years he still had no children, so he was unhappy and thought: I have no son, and once I die, the five hundred small kingdoms will not obey each other, everything will be in chaos, and the country will be uneasy. Thinking thus, he was worried and sat with his hand on his cheek. At that time, a god knew the king's thoughts and announced to the king in a dream: In the garden outside the palace, there are two hermits, one with a golden body.
