He taught and exhorted in various ways. After teaching and exhorting in this way, he made them diligently practice the path of the ten virtuous actions. As a result, those people of Jambudvipa, after their lives ended, were all reborn in the heavens as gods. At that time, his father, the Brahmin Gro, was now my father, Śuddhodana. His mother was my mother, the goddess. The great giver was me. The dragon dwelling in the silver city was Śāriputra. The dragon dwelling in the Arya city was the son of Maudgalyāyana. The dragon dwelling in the golden city was Ānanda. The sea god was Non-regressing. When Ānanda was the dragon king, he also served me, being skilled in timing, and even now he is skilled in timing, fulfilling three wishes as desired. After saying this, Ānanda rejoiced and was delighted, knelt down on his knees, and prayed: I will serve the Thus-Gone One for as long as I live. After the Blessed One spoke thus, among the many retinues, some attained the fruit of stream-entry, up to the fruit of Arhatship. Some became Pratyekabuddhas. Some generated the mind of unsurpassed Bodhi. Some attained the ground of non-retrogression, and then rejoiced and were exceedingly happy. The thirtieth chapter, "The Chapter of the Great Giving Entering the Ocean," is complete. The thirty-first chapter, "The Chapter of King Mirror Face." Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the grove of Gro in Rājagṛha. At that time, the Blessed One was surrounded by Brahmā and Indra, and so on. All the many retinues were amazed by the Blessed One's marks and signs and golden-colored body, praising and extolling him. In this way, the Blessed One surpassed all retinues, becoming the chief of all, the most excellent. The monks became doubtful and asked the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Now I am not only surpassing all retinues, becoming the most excellent, but also in the past I was surpassing all these and becoming the most excellent. Then the monks asked: How in the past?

Praying for instruction on how to become the chief, the Bhagavan spoke as follows: In the past, beyond countless, immeasurable, and inconceivable eons, in this Jambudvipa, there arose a great king who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms. He had five hundred sons. Later, a great queen gave birth to a son who had golden skin, dark blue hair, a mark of a thousand-spoked wheel on the palms of his hands, a horse image on the sole of his left foot, and an elephant image on the sole of his right foot. He was born with merit and was named Mirror Face. When the great king was afflicted with illness and nearing the time of death, the ministers asked, "Among these princes, who should be enthroned as the heir? To whom should the kingdom be entrusted?" The king said, "If my son possesses these ten qualities and characteristics, then let him be king and entrust the kingdom to him." What are the ten? They are as follows: his body color is like gold, and his hair is dark blue; both palms of his hands have the mark of a wheel; the sole of his right foot has the image of an elephant; the sole of his left foot has the image of a horse; when he wears the king's clothes, the clothes fit his body, neither too big nor too small; when he sits on the king's throne, he possesses splendor and power; the small kings offer him great service and respect; the queen and palace women also like him and pay homage to him; when he is taken to the abode of the gods, the gods also pay homage to him; through the power of his qualities and merit, he causes a rain of seven precious jewels to fall, satisfying everyone; and he is born of the great queen. If he possesses these ten qualities, then entrust the kingdom to him." After saying these words, the king manifested impermanence and passed away. Then, the princes and ministers gathered together, and starting with the eldest of the princes, they examined who possessed these ten qualities. As a result, they found that none of the other princes had golden skin, nor dark blue hair, nor the mark of a wheel on the palms of their hands, nor on the soles of their feet.
