Some say, "We are miserable because we have no parents, siblings, children, or relatives." Some say, "I am miserable because I have been afflicted with illness for a long time and cannot recover." Some say, "I was robbed by thieves after getting married, and having nothing, I beg for alms." Great Generosity, hearing these words, shed tears and departed. Then, in another place, he saw butchers slaughtering animals and skinning them, and the torturers of hell. Great Generosity asked, "Emaho! What are you doing?" They said, "We are doing this killing work, which is the tradition of our ancestors. If we don't do this, we cannot survive." Great Generosity was amazed by this and left, unable to bear to watch. Then, as he went to another place, he saw some farmers plowing fields. After the fields were plowed, many worms appeared, and many birds were pecking at and eating the worms. He asked them, "What are you doing?" They said, "We plow the fields and turn the soil, then sow seeds, and later they grow abundantly. We live off of these and also offer them to the king." Great Generosity was again amazed by this and went to another place. He saw hunters spreading nets and setting traps to catch birds. Some beings were caught in the nets and traps, and even though they thrashed and pulled, they could not escape. They cried out in pitiful voices, appearing very frightened. He asked, "What are you doing?" They said, "We also live by doing this killing work, which is our tradition." Great Generosity, hearing these words, became very disheartened. As he went to another place, he saw fishermen setting nets and catching many fish. They piled them up on the ground, and they were still moving. He asked, "What are you doing?" They said, "We have no other work in our lineage. We catch fish like this and live." Great Generosity, seeing such things, thought to himself, "These beings are poor and destitute, and for the sake of clothing and food, they do such unwholesome deeds, such as killing. Immediately after death, they will fall into the three lower realms, going from darkness to darkness, and there will be no time for liberation." Thinking this, he returned...

Then (he) came here, thinking about this day and night, and feeling unhappy, he went to his father and said to his father: I have a request, please grant it. The father said: Child, whatever you say, I will do as you say. Father, when I used to go out and wander around, I saw many people troubled for clothes and food, killing each other, lying, plundering, and doing all kinds of unwholesome deeds. I thought of giving alms to them. Please allow me to take whatever I want from my father's great treasury and give it to those poor people. The father said: All the treasures and jewels that have been accumulated are for you, why shouldn't I listen to what you say? Then, the great almsgiver received his father's permission and announced to all the villagers: The great almsgiver is going to make a large-scale almsgiving, please gather around! At that time, ascetics, Brahmins, the poor, the helpless, and the sick gathered on the roadside outside the city. They came from a distance of one hundred yojanas, two hundred yojanas, three hundred yojanas, four hundred yojanas, five hundred yojanas, and one thousand yojanas. Some came from two thousand, three thousand, four thousand, five thousand yojanas, and even ten thousand yojanas. They gathered like clouds and gave alms as they pleased, giving clothes to those who wanted clothes, food to those who wanted food, as well as jewels, gold, silver, rya (a kind of gem), mosaragalva (a kind of gem), vehicles, transportation, palanquins, gardens, fields, walking tools, etc., all given as they pleased. In this way, the almsgiver began to give alms, and after a long time, one-third of the treasury had been exhausted, and the guardian of the treasury said to the Brahmin: The son has given alms from the treasury, and one-third has been used up, leaving only two-thirds. What will we do with the gifts and goods for trade that we give to each other in the future? Please consider it. I said: Because I love my son, I can't bear to stop him, even if the treasury is empty, it doesn't matter. After a long time, two-thirds of the treasury had been exhausted, leaving only one-third, and the guardian said to the Brahmin again: The treasury two-thirds have been exhausted, leaving only one-third.

That. They exchanged gifts and said, "What kind of business should we do?" The Brahmin said, "My son is very spoiled, I dare not oppose him, I can't bring myself to say it. Please do something good for me, like creating a pretext that there is no vacant field." After the treasury guard received permission from the Brahmin, he closed the treasury door and went to work. Then, beggars came to the great benefactor, but some could not find the treasury guard, so the treasury door could not be opened. Even if the treasury guard came, he would not give as they wished, so the great benefactor thought: If this continues, the treasury guard will not be diligent. Even if the parents have instructions, the son should not exhaust the parents' treasury. What should I do to obtain the jewels as I wish, so that I can benefit many people? So he asked the people, "What kind of work in the world can obtain jewels as one wishes, and thus obtain much wealth that is inexhaustible?" Some said, "Plowing many fields will result in much wealth." Some said, "Expanding livestock breeding will result in much wealth." Some said, "Doing business on long roads will result in much wealth." Some said, "Entering the ocean to retrieve jewels will result in many jewels." The great benefactor heard what they said and thought, "Plowing fields, expanding livestock breeding, and doing business on long roads are not my lot, only entering the ocean is my lot." So he thought of entering the ocean and said to his parents, "I will retrieve many jewels from the ocean and give them as I wish to the poor. Please allow me to go to the ocean to retrieve jewels." His parents heard him say this and were shocked, and said to their son, "The poor in this world are unwise, they risk their lives to go. Why are you so poor that you think like this? If you want to give alms, give away all the wealth in the house! You must not go to the ocean, because in the ocean there are turbulent whirlpools of waves."
