After having various kinds of joyful conversations, they gathered in one place. Having gathered in one place, Shariputra and the son of Ajita said this to the venerable Ananda: "Venerable Ananda, do you have faith in serving the Bhagavan? The Bhagavan is also pleased for you to serve him. Serving the Tathagata will bring you great benefit." Venerable Shariputra, I do not have faith in serving the Bhagavan. Why is that? Because the Buddha Bhagavan is difficult to please and difficult to endure. Just as a burning fire is difficult to please and difficult to endure, similarly, the Buddha Bhagavan is difficult to please, therefore I do not have faith in serving the Bhagavan. Then, the venerable great son of Ajita said this to Ananda: "Ananda, the Bhagavan's thoughts and joy towards you are like this: just as sunlight shines from the eastern window of a multi-storied building and shines on the western wall like a patch, the Bhagavan's mind is also pleased for you, Ananda, to serve him, please have faith! Serving the Tathagata will bring you great benefit." Venerable great Ajita, if the Bhagavan grants me these three wishes, then I would be willing to serve the Bhagavan. For example, if the Bhagavan does not give me the clothes he does not eat, and I do not eat the leftovers of the food that the Bhagavan does not eat, and I do not spit in front of the Bhagavan at inappropriate times, then I would believe in serving the Bhagavan. Then, the venerable Shariputra and the great Ajita made the venerable Ananda want to serve, and then they went to where the Bhagavan was, and upon arriving, they said this to the Bhagavan: "We have made the venerable Ananda believe that he can serve the Bhagavan, and only if the Bhagavan grants me these three wishes, then I will

Thus he reported. The Blessed One declared: "Good! Now, the son of Galayana, the monk Kundgawo, is a wise man, because he sees those practicing brahmacharya coming for the sake of the Dharma with words of slander and subsequent slander, so that the brahmacharis will not say to me: 'The monk Kundgawo serves the teacher for the sake of clothes and food.' The son of Gala, this monk Kundgawo is truly a rare and wonderful Dharma! The monk Kundgawo is a wise man, he knows the time and knows the opportunity, so-called knowing the time, refers to knowing the time when the fourfold assembly goes to visit the Blessed One, and the time when they should not go to visit; also, the time when the heretical wanderers go to the presence of the Blessed One, and the time when they should not go; also, these heretical wanderers, some can refute what the Blessed One said, and some cannot refute it. Knowing which foods and drinks are beneficial and auspicious to the Blessed One, and which are not beneficial and inauspicious, therefore, the son of Gala, this monk Kundgawo is truly a rare and wonderful Dharma!" Then, Shariputra and the son of Gala, because Kundgawo served the Blessed One, arose faith. The Blessed One also praised Kundgawo as a wise man, knowing the time and knowing the opportunity, therefore the monks became suspicious and reported to the Blessed One: "For what reason and cause is the monk Kundgawo able to master the timing?" The Blessed One declared to Shariputra: "In the past, beyond immeasurable and countless kalpas, there was a great king who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms of Jambudvipa. At that time, in a city called Varudai, there was a Brahmin named Gro, who was a wise man skilled in medicine, crafts, and astrology. He served as the teacher of that king, and those eighty-four thousand small kingdoms also served him like a great king, and listened to his teachings.
