In Jambudvipa, eighty-four thousand stupas will be built simultaneously. Ananda rejoiced and reported to the Blessed One, saying: "What merit did the Tathagata accumulate in the past, that even after so long, such a great number of stupas can be built?" The Blessed One instructed: "Listen carefully and keep it well in mind, and I will tell you. In the past, countless eons ago, in this Jambudvipa, there was a king named King Light, who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms. At that time, a Buddha named Phursha appeared in the world. The king and his ministers together prepared four kinds of offerings and offered them to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks. At that time, the king and the people always met the Buddha, prostrated, and made offerings with reverence. The other principalities did not do good deeds, so in order to get the border principalities and people to do good deeds, they thought: 'Let's draw Buddha images and give them to the principalities.'\ So they gathered many painters and ordered: 'Draw Buddha images.' The painters went before the Buddha and, observing the Buddha's marks and features, began to paint. But if they painted one mark, another mark would not resemble it, and the painters could not complete the painting. The Buddha himself mixed the paints and drew the Buddha image, and then showed it to the painters. He drew eighty-four thousand Buddha images with marks and features, and sent one Buddha image to each principality, and warned: 'The king and all the people must worship and prostrate to the Buddha image with flowers, incense, and all offerings.' Those principalities and people, seeing the Buddha image of the Tathagata, were very happy and made offerings with reverence. The King Light at that time is now me. By the merit of drawing eighty-four thousand Tathagata Buddha images and distributing them to all the principalities and people, wherever I am reborn, I am reborn in the heavens, becoming Indra, the lord of the gods, with a beautiful appearance.

And having obtained the thirty-two marks and eighty minor marks, he attained perfect enlightenment. After nirvana, eighty-four thousand stupas will be built for the relics. When the Blessed One had spoken thus, Ananda and many of the retinue were exceedingly pleased and rejoiced. The twenty-seventh chapter, the Tale of King Ashoka, is complete. The twenty-eighth chapter, the Tale of the Golden Vase. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika. At that time, the monks entered their respective summer retreats. Having emerged from the retreat, they arrived where the Blessed One was. The Blessed One, having not seen those monks for a long time, thought of them with great affection. He raised his hand, which possessed a thousand-spoked wheel, and with a tone of inquiry to the monks, asked: Are you not sick? Are you not weary from begging for alms? Thus he inquired. The Tathagata, endowed with great qualities, showed respect to the monks, and the monk Ananda, having seen this, was amazed and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, you are the lord of the world, possessing immeasurable qualities, and your wisdom is inconceivable. Why do you condescend to show respect to the monks? The Blessed One said to Ananda: In the past, immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable eons ago, in this Jambudvipa, in a certain place, there was a householder who was skilled in arithmetic. He transformed all his wealth into gold, made a golden vase, and buried it underground. In this way, he did not use any of his wealth, but transformed it all into gold. Later, after a long time, he accumulated seven golden vases, which he all buried underground. Later, that householder became ill and died, and because of his attachment to the golden vases, he was reborn as a venomous snake, guarding the gold. Later, after a long time, that city was also ruined, and no one lived there. That city became deserted. That snake also lived for many years.

Having lived long and reached the end of its life, it was reborn in the same body, coiling around the golden vase and sleeping. In this way, tens of thousands of years passed, and in its last life, it grew weary of that body and thought: "Because I am attached to this gold, I have experienced such an ugly body. Now, if I could offer it to a field of merit, that would be good." So it went near the road, hid its body in the grass, and thought, "If someone comes, I will call them." At that time, that venomous snake saw a person coming from the road. The snake called out to the person, and the person heard the call. They looked around at each other, but saw nothing, so they continued on their way. The snake called out again: "Hey, please come closer to me." The person said: "Why are you calling me? You are very venomous and will kill me." The snake said: "If I wanted to harm you, I could do so even if you didn't come near me." After saying this, the person became afraid and approached the snake. The snake said: "I have a golden vase here. Can you entrust me with doing a virtuous deed? If you don't, I will harm you." The person said: "I can." The snake led the person to the golden vase, handed over a golden vase, and said: "Take this gold and offer a feast to the Sangha. On the day of the feast, I will also come, so please welcome me." After that, the person took the gold and went into the Sangha. He offered the gold to the steward of the monks, saying: "This is the gold of a venomous snake. Please use this gold to offer a feast to the Sangha." They prepared the feast with the gold, and then counted the days until the feast or offering. On that day, the person took a box and went to where the venomous snake was. The venomous snake also saw the person coming and became very happy. The person put the snake in the box and carried it away. On the way, he met a person. That person asked him where he was coming from, asking three times, but the snake...
