Thereafter, the king, hearing these words, became extremely saddened and despondent, thinking: If such a great famine occurs, how will so many people obtain food for so many years? So he gathered all the petty kings and ministers, and after deliberation, they calculated how much grain was in the granaries and how many people there were now. Even if they calculated one 'phul' (a Tibetan unit of volume) per person per year, it would not last for twelve years, so they made an announcement. After that, the famine grew worse and worse, and many people died. The king thought: How can I enable more people to survive? So, taking his queen and palace maids, he went for a stroll in the garden. Reaching a secluded spot, he waited until the queen and many people had fallen fast asleep. Then he arose, prostrated to the four directions, and made this vow: In this land, a famine has occurred, and everyone has nothing to eat. I will give up this body because of hunger, and after death, may I be born as a great fish, so that everyone may eat my flesh and be filled. Having made this aspiration, he climbed a tree and threw himself down from the tree, sacrificing his life. After his death, he was reborn as a great fish in a great river, measuring five hundred yojanas in length. At that time, there were five carpenters in that land who were digging wooden stakes by the riverbank. They saw the great fish, and the fish spoke in human language, saying: If you are hungry, cut my flesh and eat as much as you desire! After you are full, take as much as you can carry home! Because you have eaten my flesh and been filled before, when I later attain perfect Buddhahood, I will first let you taste the food of the Dharma. Tell all the hungry villagers to freely cut my flesh and eat! At that time, the five men cut the fish meat and distributed it to the villagers, and then one person told another, and all the people of Jambudvipa gathered together and cut the fish's flesh to eat. When one side of the ribs was almost finished, the other side of the ribs would automatically turn over, and when the top was almost finished, the bottom would grow in the same way. In this way, turning it over and over, for twelve years, everyone cut the fish's flesh and ate it. Everyone developed a compassionate heart towards it, and therefore stopped eating its flesh.

All of them, having completed their lifespan, were also born as gods in the higher realms. Ananda, at that time, the king who was called Nyargyurpa was me. The five carpenters who first cut and ate my flesh were the five monks and others. The many people who later ate my flesh were the eighty thousand sons of gods and my attendants who were liberated. At that time, because I first gave to the five people and saved their lives, here too I first taught the Dharma, and with the limbs of the Dharmakaya, pacified the fire of the three poisons. Ananda and the many attendants rejoiced and were delighted at the words spoken by the Bhagavan. The twenty-sixth chapter, "Shuddo Laggar Ni," is complete. Twenty-seventh Chapter: The Chapter on King Ashoka Thus I have heard. Once, the Bhagavan was dwelling in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Garden of Anathapindika. At that time, the Bhagavan went for alms with Ananda. On the road, some children were playing, dedicating houses, storehouses, and jewels on the ground. Among them, one child saw the Buddha coming from afar and was very happy, thinking to make an offering. So he took a handful of earth from the earth that had been dedicated and intended to offer it to the Buddha. But because he was too young to reach, he said to a friend: "You lie down on the ground, and I will stand on you and pour it into the bowl." The friend also said, "Yes, let's do that." So the child climbed onto his friend's shoulders and offered a handful of earth to the Buddha. The Buddha also lowered his bowl and accepted the offering of earth. Having accepted it, he gave it to Ananda and commanded, "Make this earth into clay and use it to plaster the temple." Ananda, because this small child has now accepted the earth offered by me with a joyful heart and used it to plaster the temple, by that merit, one hundred years after my nirvana, he will become a king named Ashoka. The other child will become his minister, ruling Jambudvipa, and will proclaim the qualities of the Three Jewels in all places, and will also make extensive offerings to the relics.
