Then, the couple cherished their son with love and affection. After that, the senior wife thought to herself: "Although I am of noble birth, I have no son, so there is no one to continue the lineage. If this boy grows up and inherits the family, becomes the master of wealth and enjoyment, but gives me nothing and makes me suffer," she became jealous and thought of killing him, so she stuck a needle into the crown of the little boy's head, without leaving any visible wound. The boy died not long after, and the junior wife was distraught and accused the senior wife, saying, "You killed my son!" The senior wife denied it and swore an oath, saying, "If I killed your son, may my husband be killed by a venomous snake in all my lives, and even if I have a son, may he be carried away by water or eaten by wolves. May my body be buried alive again and again, and may I eat the flesh of my son. May a fire break out in my parents' house and burn everything!" She said this. At that time, the senior wife who swore that oath was me, and I experienced all of those things myself. Those bhikshunis said: "What kind of merit did you accumulate that you were able to see the Buddha, be welcomed by the Buddha, be ordained, and finally be liberated from samsara?" Utpala said: "In the past, here, on a mountain called Righteous Sage Descended, there lived many Pratyekabuddhas, Shravakas, and Tirthikas who possessed five kinds of supernormal knowledge. At that time, one of the Pratyekabuddhas went to the village for alms, and a householder's wife saw him and was very happy, offered alms, and made offerings. After that, that Pratyekabuddha rose into the sky and displayed miracles of his body burning with flames, flowing with water, walking, sleeping, and sitting, and that householder's wife prayed, 'May I also attain such a state in the future.' At that time, the householder's wife who made that prayer was me. Therefore, I met the Tathagata, my mind was liberated, and I attained the fruit of an Arhat. Although I attained the fruit of an Arhat in this way, a red-hot iron skewer pierced through my crown and came out through the soles of my feet, and always

Such harm occurred. At that time, about five hundred nuns of high birth heard these words, and their bodies and minds felt terrified. They realized that desire was like a burning pile of flames, and their minds of greed completely disappeared. They realized that the suffering of household life was even worse than a prison. All defilements were cleared away, and they simultaneously entered into samadhi, becoming Arhats. Those nuns unanimously said to the nun Utpala, 'We were completely destroyed by greed and seized the opportunity. You preached the Dharma, causing us to reach the end of samsara.' Therefore, the Blessed One praised, 'The nun Utpala is good at teaching. Whoever teaches the Dharma teaches each other. Having attained the fruit, they are true sons of the Buddha.' Hearing these words, many attendants rejoiced and were very happy. The Chapter of the Nun Utpala, the twenty-fifth chapter, is completed. Chapter Twenty-Six, the Chapter of Shuddolagani. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was staying in the Light Garden at Kalantaka in Rajagriha. At that time, the Venerable Ananda rose from his seat, arranged his robes, knelt on the ground with his right knee, folded his palms, and said to the Blessed One, '...These five monks, what is the cause? When the Blessed One first turned the wheel of Dharma in the world, why were they able to taste the nectar of the Dharma first?' The Blessed One told Ananda, 'These five monks had previously eaten my flesh and felt happy, so now they also taste the flavor of the Dharma first, thereby obtaining liberation.' Ananda reported to the Blessed One, 'Please, Blessed One, explain what these five monks did in the past?' The Blessed One told Ananda, 'In the past, immeasurable, countless, inconceivable eons ago, in this Jambudvipa, there was a king named Shuddolagani, who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms of Jambudvipa. At that time, the astrologers in that place predicted that there would be no rain there for twelve years.'
