Although we have renounced the world, we have not tasted the nectar of the Dharma. If we cannot pacify desire, hatred, and ignorance, it will not do. So they said, "Let us go to the six nuns (six groups of women) to listen to the Dharma." Having said this, they went to where the six nuns were, prostrated, and said, "Although we have renounced the world, we have not tasted the nectar of the Dharma. Please teach us the Dharma." The six nuns thought, "If I can turn them away from the Dharma and discipline, and obtain their Dharma robes and begging bowls, that would be great." So they said, "You are all of noble and high birth, possessing the seven treasures, elephants, horses, male servants, female servants, laborers, fields, and the necessities of life. Why do you not enjoy these things, but abandon everything, become nuns, endure such afflictions and sufferings, and enter the Buddha's teachings? It would be better to return home, be with your husbands and children, happily play together as you wish, enjoy the happiness of this life, give generously, and live as you please." They advised in this way. Those nuns, hearing this advice, were not pleased and left that place. After that, those nuns went to where the nun Utpalavarna was, prostrated to Utpalavarna, inquired about her health according to the Dharma, and said, "When we were at home, we were deluded by household affairs. Now, although we have renounced the world, we are still under the control of desire and cannot be liberated from afflictions. Please, out of compassion, teach us the true Dharma." Utpalavarna said, "What do you want to know? Whatever you wish to know, whether past, future, or present, ask, and I will teach you." The nuns said, "Let us leave aside the past and future for now, and please teach us about the present, and dispel our doubts." Utpalavarna said, "Desire is like fire, it burns down mountains and valleys. It is like grass, it spreads. Under the control of desire, people harm and injure each other. Therefore, for a long time, they have been in the lower realms.

Falling into the womb, there is no time for liberation. Staying at home is clinging to suffering, separated from desires, and experiencing the unceasing suffering of birth, old age, sickness, death, and oppression by the king's laws. After life ends, merely reviving, the body and mind are tormented. Bound by family, this bondage is even tighter than a prison. I myself was born into a wandering caste. Her parents were also of a noble and pure lineage, so she had often heard of the nobility of the wandering caste. She was given in marriage to a learned man, became his wife, and had his child. Later, after her parents-in-law passed away, she became pregnant and said to her family, "I am pregnant, and the months are nearing completion. If I give birth here, it will be dirty and unsightly. I will go to my parents' house to give birth." The family said to her, "Okay." So the husband and wife, together with one child, went to her parents' house. On the way, she felt unwell and gave birth to a child under a tree in the middle of the night. Her husband was also sleeping on the other side when he was bitten by a snake in the night. When she called out to him in the night, he did not respond. When she looked in the morning, her husband had been bitten to death by a venomous snake, his life had ended, and his body had decayed. At that time, she fainted and fell to the ground. Seeing that her eldest son had also been killed by the snake, she cried out loudly. The son's crying awakened her. She carried the eldest son on her back and held the youngest son in her arms, crying as she walked. The road was desolate, and no one passed by, so she found no companions. In between, there was a large river, and the river was wide and deep, making it impossible to carry both children across. So she left the eldest son on this side of the river and carried the youngest son to the other side. Then, she came back to fetch the eldest son, but the son, seeing that she was not coming, entered the water himself and was carried away by the current. She tried to pull him back, but she was too weak and could not hold him, so she too was carried away by the current. After that, just as she reached the other side, the youngest son was eaten by a wolf, leaving only a little blood on the ground. She fainted again and only woke up after a long time.
