He entered the second dhyana. Having arisen from the second dhyana, he entered the third dhyana. Having arisen from the third dhyana, he entered the fourth dhyana. Having arisen from the fourth dhyana, he entered the samadhi of the sphere of infinite space. Having arisen from the samadhi of the sphere of infinite space, he entered the samadhi of the sphere of infinite consciousness. Having arisen from the samadhi of the sphere of infinite consciousness, he entered the samadhi of the sphere of no-thingness. Having arisen from the samadhi of the sphere of no-thingness, he entered the samadhi of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Having arisen from the samadhi of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, he entered the cessation samadhi. Having arisen from the cessation samadhi, he entered nirvana. At that time, Indra, the lord of the gods, knowing that Shariputra had entered nirvana, with hundreds of thousands of divine retinues, each carrying flowers, incense, and other offerings, arrived in that direction. They stood in the sky above without any gaps, shedding tears like rain, and scattering flowers until they were knee-deep, and said: "Venerable Shariputra's wisdom is like a deep and vast ocean! How endowed with reasoning intelligence! His eloquence is like a spring, endowed with morality, samadhi, and wisdom. The great lord of the Dharma, after the Tathagata, extensively turned the wheel of Dharma. His entering nirvana now is indeed too early!" All the people living inside and outside that city, hearing that Shariputra had entered nirvana, all took ghee and fragrant sesame oil, incense, flowers, and offerings, and all came together, unable to bear it in their bodies, tormented by grief, and each made offerings with the items they carried. Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, commanded Vishvakarman: "Prepare a chariot adorned with many jewels, to place Shariputra's body." Then, the gods, nagas, yakshas, kings, ministers, and all the people wailed and carried the body to a flat and peaceful place.

The king of the hundred thousand gods commanded the yakshas, saying, "Fetch sandalwood with a bull's head from the seashore." The yakshas fetched sandalwood from the seashore, piled it up, placed the corpse on top of it, scattered butter and sesame oil, and then lit the fire. All the attendants prostrated and returned. After the fire went out, the novice Kunte took his teacher's relics, bowl, and three robes, went to where the Buddha was, prostrated at his feet with his head, knelt on the ground, and reported: "My teacher has passed into nirvana. These are the relics, robes, and bowl." At that time, Ananda heard what the novice said, was deeply saddened, and reported to the Blessed One: "Shariputra, the lord of the Dharma, the great master, has also passed into nirvana. Who shall we rely on, and who shall we seek refuge in?" The Blessed One said: "Shariputra has passed into nirvana, but the discipline, concentration, wisdom, liberation, the knowledge and vision of liberation, and the Dharma body have not passed into nirvana. Shariputra, I cannot bear to see you pass into nirvana only now. It is not limited to this that you have passed into nirvana before. In the past, I could not bear to see you die, so I died earlier." Ananda folded his palms and reported to the Blessed One: "In the past, Blessed One, you also died earlier in your previous life. Please explain in detail the matter of showing nirvana later." The Blessed One said to Ananda: "In the past, immeasurable, countless, inconceivable eons ago, in a certain place in this Jambudvipa, there was a ruler named King Moonlight, who ruled Jambudvipa, possessed eighty-four thousand small kingdoms, and ruled eight hundred thousand cities in sixty thousand settlements. That king had twenty thousand consorts, the chief consort was named Flower Giving, the middle consort was named Great Eyes, and that king had about five hundred princes. The eldest son of the king
