and entrusted him to be raised. At that time, the householder of the upper village heard that the householder of the lower village had found a child in the belly of a fish. He thought, "That must not have been eaten by a demon, but it must be my son who fell into the water." So he went there and said, "This is my son, please give him back." He said, "This is not your son. I have no son, and I prayed to all the gods. This is the son given by the gods, found in the belly of a fish." The two householders argued and pleaded with the king for a judgment. There, the child's father said, "This is my son, he fell into the water by the river." One householder said, "I found the child in the belly of the fish I caught, he is not your son." The king combined the circumstances of the two and decreed, "This child shall be raised jointly by you two. When he grows up, each of your sons shall take a wife. Take away separately the sons born from the two wives." Then the two householders also raised the child jointly as the king had decreed, trying their best not to displease him. Later, when the child grew up, he said to his parents, "When I was born, I fell into the water, and was swallowed by a fish, experiencing all kinds of suffering. But we did not die, I have faith in renunciation, please allow me." The child's parents, because they loved their son very much, could not bear to refuse, and allowed him to renounce. That child went to where the Buddha was, and when he arrived there, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and said, "I request to renounce in the Buddha's teachings." The Blessed One said to him, "Welcome." He shaved his hair and beard, and became a monk. He was named "Two Lineages." The Blessed One preached the supreme Dharma to the monk Two Lineages, and he reached the end of suffering, and became an Arhat at that very moment. At that time, the monks had doubts, and the venerable Ananda asked the Blessed One, "What good roots did this monk Two Lineages accumulate in the past, that he fell into the water and was in the belly of a fish, but did not die? Blessed One,

一时,世尊在广严城(yangs pa can)的庵摩罗园(a mra'i tshal)中。

The Blessed One said to Ananda: "You should always listen. In the past, there was a Buddha named 'Sarvadarśin' who descended into the world and taught the Dharma to many people. At that time, a householder also came to that assembly and heard the Blessed One extensively explain the merits of giving and the virtues of upholding morality, and he was very happy. He generated pure faith and took three precepts, including not killing, from that Buddha, and offered a single copper coin. By the power of that, wherever he was born, he was endowed with wealth and jewels, and became without poverty. Ananda, that householder at that time was this twice-born monk. Because he offered a single copper coin to the Buddha, he possessed great wealth for ninety-one kalpas. Even in this present life, he possesses wealth and property in his parents' house. Because he took the precept of not killing, he fell into the water and was swallowed by a fish, but he did not die. Because he took refuge in the Three Jewels, he met me and became an Arhat. At that time, Ananda and many of the retinue were pleased with the teachings of the Blessed One and rejoiced exceedingly. The twenty-first chapter, 'The Twice-Born,' is complete. Chapter Twenty-Two: The Chapter on King Moonlight Giving His Head. Volume Six: Thus I have heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Amra garden in Vaishali. At that time, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: 'Having attained the four miraculous feet, one will remain in the world for a kalpa.' I too have diligently cultivated the four miraculous feet. Now, how long will the Tathagata remain in the world?' He spoke in this way three times. At that time, Ananda was deluded by Mara, and having heard the Blessed One's words, he remained silent. Again, the Blessed One said to Ananda: 'Go to a secluded place and contemplate carefully.' Ananda rose from his seat and went to a garden. After Ananda had left, the king of demons, Papiyas,
