Having arrived, he said to the Bhagavan (the Blessed One): "Bhagavan, you have lived in the world for a long time, and you have tamed as many beings as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River. You have also accomplished the task of completely turning away from samsara. Now your body is old, and it is time for you to pass into nirvana." Then, the Bhagavan took a small amount of earth and placed it on his fingernail. He asked the evil Mara: "Is the earth of the great earth more, or the earth on my fingernail more?" The evil Mara replied: "The earth of the great earth is very much, but the earth on your fingernail is not much." The Bhagavan said: "The sentient beings I have tamed are like the earth on my fingernail. Those who have not been tamed are like the great earth." The Bhagavan said to the evil Mara: "Now, in three months, I will pass into nirvana." The evil Mara, hearing this, was very happy and rejoiced, and went back. At that time, Ananda (Kungawo, Joyful One) was sleeping in the grove and dreamed of a great tree that covered the entire sky, with branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits that were very abundant, and that would benefit all beings. That tree had various kinds of virtues that could not be described. Before long, a great wind arose and blew down all the branches and leaves, scattering them like dust, and it lost its great power. All beings were very sad. When he woke up, he felt uncomfortable and afraid, and thought: "I dreamed of a great tree that would benefit all gods and humans, and that had all the virtues, but before long it was destroyed by a great wind. The Bhagavan is like a great tree, becoming the protector of all beings. Is the Bhagavan not thinking of passing into nirvana?" Thinking this, he was very afraid, and came to where the Bhagavan was. He prostrated at his feet with his head and said to the Bhagavan: "I had such a dream while I was in the grove. Is the Bhagavan not thinking of passing into nirvana?" The Bhagavan said to Ananda (Kungawo, Joyful One)

It is as you said. Just as you said, I will pass into nirvana in three months. Whoever has attained the four miraculous feet can remain for a kalpa. Because I have cultivated the four miraculous feet, you asked me, how long can the Thus-Gone One remain? Even though you asked three times, you did not urge me. After you left, the King of Demons, Mara, came and requested me to pass into nirvana, and I agreed. When Ananda heard these words, he was very unhappy and tormented by sorrow, and his body became unbearable. The attendants confided in each other, and everyone was immersed in sorrow, wondering where the Blessed One would go to pass away in peace. At that time, the Blessed One said to Ananda and the attendants: What is permanent? Everything is impermanent. For your sake, I have completed all tasks, and the Dharma has also been taught. Do not be sad, but strive diligently. After saying these words, the Venerable Shariputra heard the news that the Blessed One was about to pass into nirvana and felt very sad, thinking that the Thus-Gone One's passing into nirvana was too fast! All the gods and humans were saddened and became helpless. So he said to the Blessed One: I cannot bear to see the Blessed One pass into nirvana, and in any case, I must pass into nirvana first. He said this three times. The Blessed One said: If you know that the time has come, then all the noble ones will pass into nirvana in peace. Shariputra also received permission from the Blessed One, arranged his clothes, circumambulated the Blessed One about a hundred times, praised him with various verses, grasped the Buddha's feet and hands, touched his head to the ground three times, and said with folded hands: I have seen the Blessed One for the last time. After saying this, he bid farewell with respect, and with the attendant novice Kyunte, went to the place of his previous birth in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar). After arriving there,

Moreover, instruct the novice Kyunti to go to all the cities, towns, royal palaces, ministers' residences, and the places of benefactors and friends, and tell them, 'I am going to pass into nirvana, please come and pay homage.' Then, the novice Kyunti went everywhere as instructed by his teacher, and proclaimed, 'My Khenpo Shariputra is about to pass into nirvana, if you wish to see him, please all go.' At that time, King Ajatasatru, and the noble and high-ranking householders, and the benefactors, upon hearing the novice's proclamation, were all displeased and afflicted with sorrow, and they all said in unison, 'Venerable Shariputra, the great lord of Dharma, who has become the spiritual friend of many beings, now passing into nirvana is far too early.' Having said this, they quickly arrived at the place where Shariputra was, and after paying homage, they said, 'Venerable Shariputra, the great lord of Dharma, the spiritual friend of many beings, are you going to relinquish your life and pass into nirvana? Thus, we and many other beings will be without a protector and refuge.' Then, Shariputra spoke to the many attendants, 'All is impermanent, birth eventually leads to death, and assembly eventually leads to separation. Since the three realms are full of suffering, where can happiness be found? You have previously encountered the Buddha appearing in the world due to your virtuous roots, but it is still very difficult to hear the Sutras and the Dharma. Obtaining a human body is also very difficult, so strive to accumulate merit and diligently engage in virtuous deeds that liberate from samsara.' He extensively taught the many attendants with various skillful means, like administering medicine to the sick. After teaching the Dharma to the many attendants, some attained from the first fruit up to the third fruit, some became ordained and became Arhats, and some made vows to become Pratyekabuddhas. After hearing the Dharma, they paid homage and departed separately. Then, Shariputra, in the last part of that night, straightened his body and mind, and with one-pointed mind, entered the first dhyana. Having arisen from the first dhyana,
