In a certain city, for the sake of amusement and the benefit of sentient beings, all the wealthy and noble patrons were offering robes and alms. At that time, a poor couple thought to themselves: "When our parents were alive, we had precious jewels and possessions, and our storehouses were full, but we did not encounter the noble Sangha. Now we are so destitute that we have nothing, sleeping on piles of grass, without even a little bit of anything. The noble Sangha has arrived, and all the wealthy patrons are offering robes and alms, but we have nothing to offer." Thinking this, they were very unhappy and wept. The husband's tears fell on his wife's hand, and she asked him why he was crying. The husband said, "Don't you understand? The noble Sangha has come to this city, and all the wealthy patrons are making offerings to them, but we alone have nothing to offer. If we don't make offerings now, what will happen in the next life?" The wife said, "Go and search in our old storehouse, perhaps there is something left. If you can find something, we will offer it." Hearing this, the husband went to the old storehouse and found a single gold coin that was left. The wife also had a mirror. The couple also bought a new water pot, filled it with clean water, put the gold coin inside, sealed the mouth of the pot with the mirror, and took the water pot to offer to the Sangha. The Sangha accepted the offering, and some drank the water, some washed their hands and feet, and some washed their bowls. The couple saw the Sangha using what they had offered in this way, and they were very happy and joyfully returned home. Not long after, they both fell ill and died, and were reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. Wise Ananda, the poor couple at that time, who offered the water pot, were the golden god couple. In the past, because they offered a pot of water, a gold coin, and a mirror, in all their lifetimes...

Whose countenance was beautiful and whose complexion always shone like gold. Thus, for ninety-one kalpas, he was the same. At that time, he offered with a very pure mind, and now here he has reached the end of samsara and become an arhat. Kashyapa, therefore, none of the actions that pertain to the side of merit should be left undone. The poor man made a small offering, and he obtained such an immeasurable accumulation of merit. At that time, the Blessed One spoke thus, and Kashyapa and the many retinues arose with the mind to accumulate the collection of merit of generosity. Afterwards, they rejoiced and were exceedingly happy. The Twentieth Chapter, the Golden Deity, is complete. Twenty-first Chapter: The Chapter on Two Lineages. Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika. At that time, in that country, there was a wealthy householder who took a wife from the same lineage. Because he had no son, he was very unhappy. He prayed to all the gods. Later, his wife became pregnant. After the months were complete, she gave birth to a boy. That boy was also very beautiful and lovely. The parents and relatives were all happy and held a birth feast. They gathered by a river and ate the birth feast. While eating the birth feast by the river, everyone wanted to see the boy. One person took him in their arms, and then another gave him into their arms. In this way, as he was passed from one to another, one person became negligent and the boy was lost. He fell into the river and was carried away by the water. By the power of the boy's merit, because his karma was not exhausted and his life had not passed away, a fish swallowed him. He remained alive in the fish's belly. At the end of that river, there was also a village. In that village, there was also a wealthy householder who had no son. A servant of that householder was fishing by the river. He caught the fish that had the young fish inside. He cut open its belly, and a boy came out of the belly. The servant took him and offered him to the mistress. The householder's wife took the boy and looked at him. The boy was handsome and had good marks. She was very happy and thought, "This is the sign that we have prayed to all the gods!" And like a mother,
