Greed and, hatred and, ignorance and, stinginess and, jealousy, etc. are all present. It is like a mango fruit that is not ripe on the outside and not ripe on the inside either. Some monks have beautiful conduct and also possess discipline, and inwardly they also possess the qualities of spiritual practice, discipline and, meditative concentration and, wisdom. It is like a mango fruit that is ripe both inside and out. The alms-gathering monk who possesses both inner and outer qualities is also like that. Because his qualities and conduct are completely perfect, everyone respects and, reveres him. At that time, in that place, there was a householder who was very devoted to the Three Jewels, and he had a young son. He thought to himself: This son of mine should become a renunciate. I will seek a wise teacher. Why is that? Because relying on a virtuous friend, virtue will also increase. Relying on an evil friend, sinful dharma will arise. For example, the nature of the wind is irreversible, but if it comes from a sandalwood grove or, a champak grove, that wind will emit a fragrant scent. If it comes from a foul and filthy place, that wind will also be foul. For example, if a new garment is placed in a container of spices, that garment will also have a fragrance. If it is placed in a foul-smelling place, that garment will also be foul. Relying on a virtuous friend, virtue will also spread outward and increase, and relying on an evil friend, sin will arise and increase. Therefore, this son of mine also, I will offer him to this noble monk, let him become a renunciate, he thought. He went to where the monk was and said: My son wishes to become a renunciate, please, Venerable One, have compassion and allow him to become a renunciate. If you do not allow it, I will take him back home again. Then the monk examined with his eye of miraculous power, and realized that if this child becomes a renunciate, he will purely protect the precepts, and that the Buddha's teachings will increase, so he allowed him to become a renunciate and made him a novice monk. At that time, the layperson who provided the necessities of life had a lay friend. That layperson prepared a seasonal feast, for the layperson and, his

The wife, son, daughter, male servant, female servant, and all the people of the household were called. The next day, as they were going to a feast, that layperson thought to himself: If we all go to the feast, who will guard this house? If we forcibly leave some people behind, they will be unhappy and their merit will be reduced. So who would be happy to stay? It would be better to tell them that they will be rewarded and repaid immediately upon returning from the feast. At this time, that layperson had a daughter, and she said to her parents: Let all these family members go to the feast, and I will guard the house. The father was very happy and said: Very good, very good! If you guard the house, you will be just like your mother, and there will be no loss or bad things happening, so there is no need to worry. So all the people of the household went to the feast. The daughter closed all the doors tightly and stayed alone in the house. That day, the layperson forgot to send alms because he was busy. At that time, that monk thought: The sun is almost setting, and the layperson may have forgotten because he has many things to do. It would be better to send someone to beg for food from the non-eating race. So he sent the novice to beg for alms. The teacher instructed the novice: You must be very restrained in your behavior. As the Blessed One said, beg for alms from the village. Just as bees do not harm the color and fragrance of flowers, do not be attached and beg for alms from each house. Do not be attached to forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects, and guard your senses well. If you keep the precepts, you will not be devoured by demons, but you will obtain the fruit. Like Devadatta, even though he could recite many sutras, because he did evil and broke the precepts, he was born in the Avici hell. Like Kokalika, because he slandered and broke the precepts, he was also born in hell. Like Chudapanthaka, even though he only knew one verse, because he kept the precepts, he became an Arhat. Precepts are the entrance to Nirvana and the cause of great happiness, just as Brahmins preach the Dharma for three or four months.
