The chapter on guarding morality. Volume Five. Those who guard morality would rather lose their body and life than ever violate morality. Why is that? Because morality is the root of entering Bodhi, the supreme unadulterated Dharma, and the path to happily enter Nirvana. The merit of purely guarding morality is immeasurable. For example, the great ocean is immeasurable and boundless. The merit of guarding morality is also immeasurable and boundless. Just as the ocean is the abode of asuras, turtles, crocodiles, and large beings belonging to the aquatic species, morality is also the same, being the abode of many great beings who abide in the three vehicles. Just as there are many treasures such as gold, silver, and so on in the great ocean, the ocean of morality is also the same, with many treasures such as the basis of impermanence, the thirty-seven factors of Bodhi, meditation, samadhi, and so on. For example, the bottom of the great ocean is also diamond, and the end is also surrounded by diamond, and even though four rivers flow in, it does not decrease or increase. The ocean of morality is also the same, with the Vinaya like a diamond as the bottom, the ring of the Abhidharma surrounding the edge, and even though the four Agamas flow in like rivers, there is no increase or decrease. Why does the ocean not decrease? Because the fire of the hell-beings of uninterrupted karma dries up the ocean, therefore the water of the ocean does not decrease. The rivers constantly flow in, so it does not decrease. The ocean of morality is also, because of mindfulness it does not increase, and because it possesses qualities it does not decrease. Therefore, one should know that the merits of those who guard morality are extremely numerous. After the Blessed One passed into Nirvana, in a place called Anda, there was a Bhikshu mendicant who liked to live in monasteries and possessed good conduct. The Bhikshu mendicant is praised by all the Buddhas and does not dwell among ordinary people. Why is that? Because the Bhikshu mendicant is content with few desires, does not accumulate anything, is a solitary eater, and has no concealment.

They wear the three robes, etc. They are monks. They are the principal ones. A bhikṣu who dwells within the saṃgha is one who is very desirous, uncontented, miserly, and attached to everything, and thus will not attain great fame. That bhikṣu who is an alms-gatherer is endowed with the practice of qualities. Having attained the fruit of a bhikṣu, he abides in the six superknowledges, the three knowledges, and the eight liberations. His conduct is beautiful in every way, and he becomes universally renowned. At that time, in a place called Anta, there was a devotee who had great faith in the Three Jewels, who did not kill, did not steal, did not engage in sexual misconduct, did not lie, and did not drink intoxicating liquor, observing these five precepts, and who possessed qualities. That devotee thought to himself, "If I were to provide for that bhikṣu who is an alms-gatherer for the rest of his life, I would experience merit. If I were to invite him to my home, he would suffer from the cold and heat on the way, and it would also become an obstacle to meditation. Even when it ripens later, I would still have to think and strive to obtain it. If I were to send the sustenance to his dwelling, then when it ripens later, I would obtain it without having to strive." Thinking in this way, that devotee, with a mind of faith, prepared various kinds of food with a hundred flavors, fragrances, and colors, and provided for him in this way day after day. It is difficult to examine a bhikṣu in terms of four kinds of good and bad, just as it is difficult to determine whether a mango fruit is ripe or not. Some bhikṣus have very beautiful conduct and walk slowly, not looking beyond the yoke, but inwardly they are filled with desire, hatred, and delusion, engaging in what is not dharma, and their discipline is lost. This is like a mango fruit that is ripe on the outside but not ripe on the inside. Some bhikṣus have coarse outward conduct and do not conform to conduct, but inwardly they are endowed with the practice and qualities of a renunciate, possessing meditation, samādhi, and wisdom. This is like a mango fruit that is ripe on the inside but not ripe on the outside. Some bhikṣus have coarse conduct and commit offenses, and their discipline is lost, and inwardly they are also filled with desire.
