Just as speaking pleasing words, he gladdened the householder Jewel-born and spoke thus: 'Do not grieve, I shall ordain you.' Shariputra did not exert himself in difficult asceticism for three countless eons, nor did he perform meritorious deeds for a hundred eons. Shariputra, in all his lifetimes, did not perform extremely difficult deeds such as cutting off his head, gouging out his eyes, giving away his bones, feet, flesh, blood, skin, legs, hands, ears, and nose in charity. Shariputra did not give his body to a tigress, did not jump into a pit of fire, did not drive a thousand iron nails into his body, nor did he light a thousand butter lamps on his body. Shariputra did not perform the act of giving away lands, cities, wives, sons, male servants, female servants, elephants, horses, and the seven precious jewels. Shariputra, in the first countless eon, did not attend to eighty-eight thousand Buddhas, in the intermediate countless eon, did not attend to ninety-nine thousand Buddhas, and in the final countless eon, did not attend to ten trillion Buddhas, and after ordaining, he did not perfect the perfection of discipline. If Shariputra is not master of the Dharma, why do you say that this is a lineage of ordination? Only I am master of the Dharma, supported by the six perfections, wearing the armor of patience, seated on the vajra seat under the Bodhi tree, having subdued all the hosts of demons, having manifestly awakened, there is no one equal to me. Therefore, follow me, and I will ordain you.' Thus, the Blessed One pleased him with various means, and all his sorrows were extinguished, and he generated a great joyful mind, and followed the Buddha to the monastery. Then, the Blessed One said, 'Now, have the great Kasyapa ordain this householder.' Why is that? Beings are tamed by whatever action they are in accord with, but those who are in accord with the Buddha will not be tamed by others. Those who are in accord with the actions of others should also be so.

The earth god cannot be subdued, and whoever is connected with Shariputra, such as Mahakashyapa, Kashyapa, Aniruddha, Meghiya, and all other attendants, cannot be subdued. Similarly, whoever is connected with whom, cannot be subdued by others. At that time, Mahakashyapa also thought that this householder was old and could not study recitation, could not meditate, and could not do the work of the Sangha, feeling that he had declined from three things. But Shakyamuni Buddha ordered, "Let him be ordained!" He thought that he could not disobey the Buddha's will, so he had him ordained and received full ordination. This person also planted the cause of liberation in his previous life. Just as a fish is hooked by the iron hook of Dharma, so that it is not swallowed by demons and can escape, he also planted the cause of liberation and accumulated virtuous deeds, so he was diligent day and night, accustomed to reading and reciting, and widely understood and realized the Sutra Pitaka, Vinaya Pitaka, and Abhidhamma Pitaka. But because he was old and frail, he could not serve, respect, greet, and send off properly, nor could he speak frankly to the teacher and prostrate. Those young monks who had been ordained earlier and were of higher status said, "This old monk relies on his ability to recite, read, and study, and does not respect us." Therefore, they always harmed him. Then the old monk thought like this: When I was at home, I was tormented by my wife and children. Now that I have become a monk, I have become so negligent. Now that I am tormented by these young monks again, what kind of evil have I done in the past to suffer such pain? I would rather die. So he went to the bank of a large river next to that garden, took off his robes and hung them on a tree branch, knelt on the ground, shed tears, and vowed: I am not abandoning the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, but only abandoning this body. With the merit of my giving, keeping precepts, diligent effort, and reciting the Sutra Pitaka, may I be separated from this body,

Rich and wealthy, born into a harmonious family. May I not create obstacles to entering the virtuous Dharma, may I always encounter the Three Jewels, may I be ordained and diligently practice the Dharma, may I meet wise teachers, and may I also realize Nirvana. Thus he vowed. Where there was a raging river, deep, swirling, he resolved to bravely jump in. At that time, the son of Dagala, with his divine eye, wondered, 'What is my old attendant doing now?' He saw my attendant jump into the water, and without going into the water, he rescued him with his miraculous power and placed him on the bank, asking, 'Son of Dharma, what are you doing?' The old man was ashamed and embarrassed, wondering how to answer. 'If I lie and deceive the teacher, deceiving the teacher will cause me to lose my tongue in all lifetimes and be accompanied by faults. Even if I lie, the teacher, possessing clairvoyance, will know.' Whoever in the world possesses the wisdom of the wise, and is naturally upright and without deceit, will be respected by the gods. If one possesses the wisdom of the wise but has deceit, he cannot be a teacher to others, and people will respect him. Even if one has no wisdom, but is without deceit and is upright, although he cannot benefit others, he can benefit himself. If one is foolish and ignorant, and also has deceit, he is the enemy of all, unforgivable. No matter what he says, people will say, 'He is lying, he is deceiving.' Even if he speaks the truth, no one will believe him. Therefore, I think I should lie to the teacher and deceive him, but rather than being dishonest, I should tell the truth.' Thinking thus, he said to the teacher, 'I am tired of family, I renounced the world to seek the truth, but now I am unhappy again, I think I am going to die.' When the son of Dagala heard him say this, he thought, 'If I don't threaten him with the fear of birth and death, ordination will be meaningless.' So he said to him, 'My Dharma robe's
