And, becomes the successor of the Buddha. It eliminates sinful and unwholesome dharmas and increases wholesome dharmas. It eliminates the stains of faults and increases the deeds of unsurpassed merit. Therefore, the Bhagavan said that the merit of ordination is higher than Mount Meru, deeper than the ocean, and wider than the sky. If someone creates obstacles and hindrances to ordination, causing it not to be as desired, that is a very serious offense. For example, just as a person who goes into the darkness cannot see anything, so too is the ripening of his sins. He will fall into the hell of sentient beings in the extremely imperceptible darkness, the great darkness. Just as all the rivers and streams flow into the ocean, so too is the ripening of that person's sins. All faults gather on his body. Just as Mount Meru is burned completely without residue when the fire of the eon arises, so too is that person burned by the fire of the hell of sentient beings, and he is burned completely without residue. Allow others to ordain, or if I ordain, the merit is very great. Ordination is using the completely pure water of the Sutras to wash away all the stains of afflictions, completely eliminate the suffering of samsara, and become the cause of nirvana. With the feet of discipline, one walks on the ground of completely pure morality, and with the eyes of Abhidharma, one sees the good and evil of the world, and one walks on the eightfold noble path as desired, and one goes to the city of nirvana. Therefore, whether an old man or a young man ordains, or allows others to ordain, or I ordain, the merit is extremely great. At that time, the Bhagavan was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove of Kalandaka in Rajagriha (Rajgir, located in present-day Bihar, India), in the grove of light. At that time, in Rajagriha, a householder named Auspicious, who was one hundred years old, heard that the qualities of ordination were so immeasurable, and thought: Why should I not ordain in the Buddha's teachings? So he said to his wife, son, and servants: I am going to ordain. That person, because of old age and frailty,

Having heard that everyone in the entire household was sad and felt it was unnecessary, they said they wanted to renounce. They were delighted and said that the time to go quickly had arrived. Then, that householder came out of his house and went to the Grove of Light to request the Blessed One to allow him to renounce. When he arrived at the Grove of Light, he asked the monks, 'Where is the Buddha, the Blessed One, the Great Compassionate One, who extensively performs deeds for the benefit of gods and humans?' The monks replied, 'The Buddha, the Blessed One, is wandering for the benefit of many beings and has gone elsewhere.' The householder then asked the monks, 'Among the retinue of the Buddha, the Great Teacher, who is the most learned and wise leader?' The monks indicated, 'It is the Venerable Shariputra.' That old man, leaning on his staff, went to where Shariputra was. Upon arriving, he dropped his staff, prostrated, and prayed thus: 'Venerable, please allow me to renounce!' Venerable Shariputra, observing that this householder was old and incapable of learning, meditating, and performing the three tasks of the Sangha, thought that he could not do it, and said thus: 'Go back! You are old and have missed the time; you cannot renounce.' Then, he went successively to the Great Kashyapa, Upali, Anuruddha, and other Arhats to pray. They all asked him, 'Have you not prayed to anyone before?' He replied, 'I prayed to the Venerable Shariputra before.' 'Then what did he say?' 'He said that I am old and have missed the time, so I cannot renounce.' Then, those monks said, 'If even Shariputra, such a learned and wise leader, does not allow it, then we are the same as him and will not allow it either.' For example, if a skilled doctor, proficient in medicine, examines a patient and then abandons treatment, other minor doctors will not treat him either, because they know that this person certainly has signs of death. If Shariputra, who is intelligent, does not allow it, then other monks are the same as him and will not allow it either.'

The householder, because the monks did not allow him to be ordained, came out of the Grove of Light and sat on the doorstep, crying loudly and lamenting. I have not committed any great offense since I was first born, why am I not allowed to be ordained? Like Uli who came from butchers, like the one with a fly-whisk who throws away vomit, like Angulimala who killed countless people, and like Asika who was a cruel and savage man, all of them were ordained. What offense do I have that I am not allowed to be ordained? Having said this, the Blessed One went to him and manifested his body, shining brightly with light, adorned with marks and signs, appearing like the seven precious banners of the lord of the hundred thousand gods. He said to the householder Palakirti, "Why are you crying?" At that time, the householder heard the Buddha's voice, which was like the voice of Brahma, and was overjoyed, as happy as a son seeing his mother. He prostrated with his five limbs on the ground, paid homage to the Buddha, and said, "Among sentient beings, even murderers, evildoers, liars, and slanderers are ordained. What sin do I have that I am not allowed to be ordained in the Buddha's teachings? All the people in my household are tired of old age and are useless. If the Buddha's teachings do not allow me to be ordained, even if I return home, no one will welcome me and I will not be allowed to enter the house. I have nowhere to go, and today I will surely die." Then the Blessed One said to the householder Palakirti, "Who can say for sure, raising their hand to the sky, 'This one can be ordained, this one cannot be ordained'?" The householder replied, "Blessed One, among the retinue of the Wheel-Turning King of Dharma, the most intelligent, the greatest after the Buddha, the leader of the world, Shariputra, did not allow me to be ordained in the teachings." Then the Blessed One, with great compassion, like parents to a very devoted son
