The Blessed One said to Ananda: "At that time, the poor man who offered a handful of jewels to the Sangha was this Bhikshu Heavenly Jewel. In the past, with pure faith, by offering just a handful of white pebble jewels to the Sangha, for ninety-one kalpas, with immeasurable merit, he possessed many precious jewels, abundant clothing and food, and his enjoyment never diminished. At that time, with just pure faith, I passed away in the world, met, and attained the fruit. At that time, many retinues, having heard the Buddha's words, generated pure faith. Some attained the fruits from the first to the fourth, while others generated the mind of Bodhi, abiding in the irreversible ground. All those many retinues rejoiced in the words of the Blessed One and manifested great joy. This is called the Chapter of Heavenly Jewel, the tenth. Eleventh, the Chapter of Patience. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir), in the Bamboo Grove, the sanctuary of the Kalandaka birds. At that time, not long after the Blessed One had attained perfect enlightenment, first... and so on, five bhikshus were ordained. After that, the Kashyapa brothers and their followers, a thousand bhikshus, were ordained. Then, many non-Buddhists also renounced their former ways and abided in the Dharma, and the people of Rajagriha generated immeasurable joy, praising and extolling: 'The Tathagata's coming into the world is truly rare and wonderful, benefiting many beings.' Furthermore, they said, 'What karmic connection did the first ordained, such as... and the retinue of the Kashyapa brothers, have with the Tathagata in the past, that they were the first to taste the nectar of the inner Dharma?' Having heard these words, those bhikshus similarly reported them in detail to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said to them: 'In the past, for the sake of these people, I made a great vow, that when I attain perfect enlightenment, first...'

And vowed to work for these things. When the monks heard this, they thought about how the Blessed One had made vows in the past, and asked him to explain in detail with compassion. The Blessed One said to the monks: You should always listen and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. In the past, in immeasurable, countless, inconceivable, unimaginable, and unspeakable eons ago, in a place called "ཌ", there was a king named Contention. At that time, in that place, there was a practitioner named Sage of Patience, who lived in the mountains with five hundred disciples, practicing patience. At that time, the king, along with his consorts, palace maids, and ministers, went to the mountains for pleasure. Because the place was very comfortable, the king fell asleep. The palace maids went ahead, admiring the place and the flowers. They saw the Sage of Patience sitting upright, very focused, and they developed faith in him, offering him various flowers. Those consorts sat in front of him listening to the Dharma. When the king woke up, he could not find his consorts and the four ministers, so he searched for the consorts. He saw the consorts sitting in front of the practitioner, and he said to the practitioner: Have you attained the samadhi of the boundless realms of rebirth? He replied that he had not. He asked again: Then have you attained the four immeasurables? He replied that he had not. He asked again: Then have you attained the four dhyanas? He also replied that he had not. The king was very angry and said: If you have not attained these qualities, you are a lowly commoner, how can one trust you to be alone with women in a secluded place? Who are you who always live here? What work do you do? The practitioner said to the king: I am practicing patience here. Then, the king drew his sword and asked: You say you are practicing patience, do you endure or not endure? Saying this, he cut off the practitioner's hands and asked: Who are you? He replied: I am the patient one. Then he cut off his feet, and (he) still said (that he was) the patient one.

said. At that time, The place shook in six ways, and about five hundred attendants also flew into the sky and arrived there. They said, 'Teacher, are you not losing your patience as you experience such suffering?' The hermit said, 'My mind has not changed, it has not been lost.' The king, also frightened, said to the hermit, 'How can one believe that you are patient?' The hermit said, 'The words I speak are not false. If they are true, then by that truth, may the blood turn into milk, and may the severed limbs be restored and become as before.' As soon as he spoke, the blood turned into milk, and the limbs were restored, becoming as before. When the king saw that he was so patient, he was even more frightened and thought, 'Why did I harm this great hermit? Please have compassion on me and allow me to repent.' The hermit said, 'You took up weapons for the sake of a woman and cut off my limbs, but my patience is like the earth. When I later attain enlightenment, may I cut off your three poisons with the sword of wisdom.' At that time, the nagas and gods of that mountain, seeing that the king was harming and injuring the hermit, were angry and gathered clouds, and sent down hail and lightning, and even sent down thunderbolts to kill the king and his retinue. The hermit said, 'Do not harm and injure him in this way for my sake.' The king repented there, and always invited the hermit to the palace and made offerings. At that time, about a thousand wandering ascetics who had entered other teachers, seeing that the king had faith and devotion to the patient hermit, became jealous and, from a place where the truth was not visible, threw dirt, filth, and stains of impurity at the hermit. At that time, those hundreds of ascetics who threw earth at me are now the hundreds of monks such as Chuwo Odsung (lit. River Light Protector). At that time, from the vows I made, by this constant meditation on patience, when I become enlightened, may I wash away your dust and dirt with the water of nectar.
