Thus they pleaded. We have been born in the pure heavenly realm merely by hearing the words of the Blessed One teaching the Dharma. Now again, for the sake of your compassion for us, please teach the sacred Dharma. After they pleaded thus, the Blessed One taught the Dharma of the Four Noble Truths, and those gods understood it and attained the fruit of stream-entry. From then on, they would not fall into the three lower realms, but would be reborn in the heavenly realms up to seven times, and then all defilements would be exhausted. Then Ananda pleaded to the Blessed One: Last night, the light of the gods shone everywhere, and those gods who came to prostrate at the feet of the Blessed One, please tell me where they came from. The Blessed One said: Listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. When I was teaching the Dharma to the fourfold assembly of gods and humans in a certain grove of Kharatsang, about five hundred geese, trusting in the sound of the Dharma being spoken, generated a mind of joy towards me. As they were coming to me, they were caught by a hunter and all killed. Because of their mind of trust in the sound of the Dharma, they were born in the realm of the Thirty-Three Gods. Remembering their former state, they came to prostrate to me. Then Ananda, hearing the words of the Blessed One, rejoiced greatly and praised, saying, "It is wonderful, it is amazing!" And he pleaded thus: It is wonderful that the Blessed One has come into the world, there is no one who is not satisfied by the rain of Dharma. Even a creature in the animal realm, when young, can gain merit by hearing the Dharma, what need is there to mention humans? The fruit of merit gained by holding it in mind with a mind of faith is a hundred thousand times greater, there is no comparison! The Blessed One said to Ananda: Well done, well done! Just as you have said, the Blessed One's coming into the world is for the benefit and happiness of all, raining down nectar everywhere and satisfying many beings. Therefore, you should diligently apply yourself to the Buddha's teachings with a single mind. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, Ananda and the many attendants rejoiced and were delighted. The story of the five hundred geese being born as gods.

Chapter 48. Chapter 49, named "The Steadfastness of the Lion's Intention." Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Rajagriha on Vulture Peak Mountain. At that time, Devadatta constantly harbored ill will towards the Blessed One, and in order to make the Tathagata disappear, he proclaimed that Devadatta himself was the Buddha. He instigated Prince Ajatashatru to kill his father, saying that it would be good if the new Buddha and the new king ruled the country together. Prince Ajatashatru listened to him, killed his father, and ascended the throne himself. At that time, the people of the country harbored ill will towards all the monks and did not even want to see them. Later, at another time, the monks went to the town to beg for alms, but the people of the country were angry and gave them nothing. The monks returned with empty bowls and went to Vulture Peak Mountain, where they reported to the Blessed One: "Devadatta has committed sinful and unwholesome deeds, and therefore all the patrons have developed ill will towards the monks." The Blessed One said to Ananda: "Any sentient being who harbors ill will towards a monk wearing the kasaya robe is harboring ill will towards the Buddhas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Arhats of the past, and is also harboring ill will towards the Buddhas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Arhats of the future. It should be known that this is also harboring ill will towards the Buddhas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Arhats who are living in the present. Thus, by harboring ill will towards the noble ones of the three times, sinful actions will ripen, producing immeasurable evil consequences. What is the reason for this? Because the kasaya robe is the banner of the noble ones of the three times. Any sentient being who shaves his hair and beard and wears a discolored robe will, before long, have his mind completely liberated from all suffering, attain undefiled wisdom, and become the protector, refuge, and support of all beings. Any sentient being who goes forth and wears a discolored Dharma robe, if he generates faith, will obtain immeasurable merit. Ananda!"
