Having heard the Buddha's words, some of those present attained the fruits ranging from the first to the second, the third, and the Arhatship. The many in attendance rejoiced and were delighted at the words of the Blessed One. This is the forty-fifth chapter, the story of King Mandhata. Forty-sixth: The Chapter of Sumana's Ten Sons. Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, at Anathapindika's monastery. At that time, Anathapindika the householder had a youngest daughter named Sumana, who was beautiful in appearance and pleasing to behold. Among the children, the parents loved this youngest daughter the most, and they took her wherever they went. On one occasion, the householder went to pay homage to the Buddha, and the daughter followed behind. When the daughter saw the Buddha, she felt particularly joyful and thought to anoint all the places where the Buddha resided with incense. At that time, the daughter was holding a mango fruit in her hand, and the Blessed One said, "Give it here." The daughter immediately offered the mango to the Blessed One. The Blessed One took the mango and wrote many names of sacred incense on it, and then gave it back to the daughter. After that, the daughter and her parents returned home, and when the market time came, they bought many kinds of incense that the Blessed One liked, and then returned to the Jeta Grove, grinding incense and anointing all the places as they did every day. On another occasion, a prince from the country of Tigaśiri was sent to the royal palace, and on his way back, he eventually went to the Jeta Grove. Seeing the daughter grinding incense, he became enamored of her and thought of taking her as his wife. So he asked King Prasenajit to give him the daughter. The king asked, "Whose daughter is she?" He replied, "She is the daughter of Anathapindika the householder." The king said, "Even if you ask me, it will be of no use. You should ask the daughter's parents." The prince repeatedly asked the king, and the king advised him to do the same.

That prince sent all my servants and attendants back to their homeland, leaving only one elephant. Another time, the prince went to the Victory Garden, stole Princess Sumana, put her on the elephant, and fled. Anathapindika chased after them but couldn't catch up. Later, he returned to his homeland and took her as his wife. After that, that wife became pregnant. Later, after the months were full, she laid ten eggs. When the eggs were broken, from each egg came a boy who was handsome, beautiful, and superior to others. These boys grew up to be brave and skilled, and they loved to hunt wild animals. The boys' mother warned them not to hunt wild animals like this. The boys said to their mother: There is no greater joy than hunting wild animals. Mother doesn't allow us to kill, as if Mother hates us. The mother said: I don't hate you, but because I don't love you, I don't allow you to hunt wild animals. Because the sin of killing will cause sentient beings to suffer in hell for hundreds of thousands of years, always turning into deer heads, sheep heads, rabbit heads, and so on, turning into the heads of all wild animals, and being killed by the hell guards for countless years. Even if you want to escape from there, you cannot escape the karma of sin. The children said: If we do as you teach, did you hear these teachings from someone else? Or did you think and say it yourself? The mother said: These words I heard from the Buddha. The children said: What is Buddha? the mother replied. Haven't you heard? The son of King Suddhodana, with a beautiful and handsome body, could have become a Chakravartin king, but he did not want old age, sickness, and death, so he became a monk. By practicing the path, he achieved his wish and attained the supreme fruit, his body sixteen cubits tall, adorned with marks and signs, possessing the three knowledges and six supernormal powers, knowing the past without limit, and knowing the future without limit. The three times are like
