The arising of the mind of aspiration. The venerable Ananda and many attendants rejoiced and were exceedingly delighted at what the Blessed One had said. The chapter on the initial mind of aspiration of the first Buddha, Maitreya, is the forty-fourth. Finished. Chapter Forty-Five: The Chapter of King Born from the Crown of the Head. Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, together with a great monastic community of thirteen hundred and fifty monks. At that time, the Blessed One saw that the monks were being coquettish, attached to gain and fame, especially accumulating many things, and being contentious without knowing contentment. Having seen this, the Blessed One spoke of these faults of attachment to gain to the monks. Whoever is attached to gain will fall into the three lower realms immediately after the body is destroyed and life is transferred, and will experience immeasurable suffering. Therefore, I clearly remember that in a past time, I fell under the power of desire and experienced much suffering. Then, Ananda knelt on the ground, folded his palms, and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, what was it like in the past when you fell under the power of attachment to desire? The Blessed One replied: In the past, beyond countless, immeasurable, boundless, inconceivable, and unfathomable eons, in this Jambudvipa, there was a king named Guspa, who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms of Jambudvipa. He had twenty thousand consorts and palaces. He had ten thousand great ministers. At another time, a blister like an egg appeared on the king's head, clear and completely pure, without pain. It gradually grew larger and larger, and when it burst when it was the size of a gourd, a beautiful and auspicious boy with dark blue hair and a body color like gold emerged from within. An interpreter of signs looked at him and said: This child possesses signs of very rare qualities and will not die prematurely. He will become a universal monarch and rule over the four continents.

The child was named "Born from the Crown." When he grew up, because he possessed virtues, the king also made him a minor king of a certain region. At another time, the great king fell ill, and all the minor kings gathered to attend to him and provide treatment, but it was to no avail, and he passed away. Then, the minor kings gathered and went to where "Born from the Crown" was, and upon arriving, they said: The great king has passed away, we beseech you to ascend to the throne. "Born from the Crown" then said: If I have the merit and power to become king, may the Four Great Kings and Indra and others pray for me and bestow empowerment upon me. As soon as he spoke, the kings of the Four Great Kings descended, holding a precious vase filled with scented water, and poured it upon "Born from the Crown's" head, thus empowering him. Indra, the lord of the gods, also descended, offering a precious diadem, placing it upon his head, and praising his virtues. Then, the minor kings requested him to go to the great land in the center, and "Born from the Crown" again said: If I have the power to become king, the land should come to me, I will not go seeking the land. As soon as he spoke, the great land, including the king's palace, gardens, bathing ponds, and all necessities, appeared there. The golden wheel, the elephant jewel, the horse jewel, the woman jewel, the minister jewel, the householder jewel, and all others gathered, and he became a universal monarch ruling over the four continents, governing the country according to Dharma. Later, he saw many people digging the earth and plowing fields, and he asked his ministers what these people were doing. The ministers replied: All living beings need food to survive, so these people are also plowing fields to sustain themselves. Then the king said: If I have the merit and power to become king, may food with a hundred flavors appear naturally without the need for labor, so that everyone is satisfied and full, without hunger or thirst.

He said, "May it be so." As soon as he said this, food and drink appeared. Then, as he continued to walk, he saw some weavers spinning and weaving, and asked, "What are these people doing?" They replied, "Food is already available, but there are no clothes to adorn the body, so these people are making clothes to wear." Then the king said again, "If I truly have the power to be king, then may there be clothes to wear, and may all the poor be satisfied with clothes." As soon as he said this, all the trees grew clothes of various colors, so many that everyone could wear them without end. Then the king walked on and saw people holding musical instruments, and asked, "What are these?" They replied, "Food and clothes are sufficient, so we play a lot of music, these are musical instruments for our own enjoyment and play." The king said, "If I truly have the power of a king, then may all the musical instruments and sacred objects be available," and as soon as he said this, many musical instruments hung from the branches of all the trees, and if anyone wanted a musical instrument, they would automatically play beautiful sounds, and just hearing them would make people happy. Due to the king's merit and great power, the seven precious jewels fell from the sky like rain, filling the entire country, and the king asked the ministers, "Whose merit is it that this has happened?" The ministers replied, "This is due to the king's merit and the merit of sentient beings," and the king said again, "If it is due to the power of the merit of sentient beings, then may these jewels continue to fall! If it is only my power, then may they only fall inside the palace," and as a result, the falling stopped everywhere else, and only inside the palace did they fall for seven days and nights. King Spyi bo skyes (Born from the Crown of the Head) enjoyed the five desires in Jambudvipa for eighty-four thousand years, and then, one day, a yaksha appeared at the gate of the palace, making a loud noise.
