Many were overjoyed and rejoiced. The chapter on Elephant Care, the forty-second, is complete. Forty-third, the chapter on the Brahmin offering a patch. Volume Twelve. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, the Blessed One, taking Ananda as his attendant, went for alms. The Blessed One's robe was slightly torn, and he considered this a reasonable matter for taming sentient beings. After begging for alms and returning, a Brahmin came, prostrated to the Blessed One with his head, observed that the Blessed One's name was clear and bright, saw that the Blessed One's robe was slightly torn, and thought he should give alms, took a piece of white cloth from his house, cut off a piece, and offered it to the Blessed One, praying, "Please use this piece of cloth to patch your robe." The Blessed One also accepted it out of compassion for him, and the Brahmin was very happy and satisfied. The Blessed One, out of compassion for him, prophesied, "Brahmin, in the future, after hundreds of countless kalpas have passed, you will attain enlightenment, and your name will be Good Knowledge Manifest, and you will perfect the ten powers." After the prophecy, the Brahmin left very happily. At that time, the merchants and householders of noble lineage in that country thought, "Why does the Blessed One give such a great reward for such a small offering?" Each prepared white cloth and made various kinds of Tathagata robes and offered them to the Buddha. Ananda requested the Blessed One, "What good deeds did the Blessed One do in the past that everyone offers so many robes?" The Blessed One said, "Listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. In the past, beyond countless immeasurable kalpas, there was a Buddha named Sarvadarśin who came into the world with ninety thousand attendants.

Where did he reside? At that time, the king was named Bandhu. At that time, a great minister invited the Buddha and the Sangha to stay there for three months. The Blessed One also agreed to it. That minister returned home and prepared all the necessary items. At that time, the king also thought of inviting the Buddha and the Sangha, so he went to where the Buddha was and said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, please accept my offerings for three months, together with the Blessed One and the noble Sangha. The Blessed One said to the king: I have already agreed to the invitation of the great minister, and it is not right to go against the previous promise of a great being. Then the king returned to the palace and said to the great minister: There is no one greater than me in this country, and the Blessed One resides in my country. I had thought of making offerings to him before, so I invited him. You wait a moment, and after I have invited him, you can invite him. The minister said to the king: O God, you can freely dispose of my body and life, and the Tathagata always resides here, and the king's country is always peaceful and happy, without disease. If it can be like this, I am willing to wait. The king thought that this was not right, so he said: Let us two invite him in turns. So, one day the king invited, and one day the minister invited, fulfilling the wishes of both. At that time, that great minister offered three robes to the Tathagata, and also gave each of the ninety thousand Bhikshu Sangha a set of seven robes. Ananda, at that time, do not think that the great minister who offered robes to the Buddha and the Sangha was someone else, that is me now. I never tire of doing good deeds in all my lives, so this is also the maturation of all those good deeds.

Thus, it was not wasted. After hearing what the Blessed One said, the Venerable Ananda and many others in the retinue became diligent in performing virtuous deeds, rejoiced, and expressed their approval. The chapter on the Brahmin offering alms, the forty-third (ends). Chapter Forty-Four: The Chapter on the Initial Arousal of Loving-Kindness by the Buddha Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika. At that time, the monks, having emerged from the summer retreat, went to where the Blessed One was, prostrated to the Blessed One, and inquired about his well-being, asking if he was free from illness. The Blessed One, with a mind of loving-kindness, gladdened them, saying: Monks, have you not suffered? After teaching with great affection and loving-kindness, the Venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: How long has it been, Blessed One, that you have been so affectionate towards the monks, arousing a mind of loving-kindness? The Blessed One said to Ananda: If you wish to know, I will tell you. In the past, countless eons ago, beyond what can be expressed, two wicked people fell into the hell of sentient beings. The guards of hell made them pull iron carts, beat them with iron hammers, and made them run back and forth without stopping. One of them was weak and unable to pull, so he stopped, and the guards beat him with iron hammers, and he died and was revived. One friend, seeing such suffering, aroused a mind of loving-kindness and compassion. He said to the guards of hell: Let me pull this cart alone, release this person. The guards, enraged, beat him with iron hammers, and he died immediately, and was reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. Ananda, at that time, at that moment, the one who aroused a mind of loving-kindness and compassion while dwelling in the hell of sentient beings is now me. At that time, I first aroused a mind of compassion for those sentient beings in hell, and until now, I have been loving all sentient beings.
