The king spoke thus: "My son, Vaidūrya, has been afflicted with a feverish illness. The doctor has diagnosed that he needs to be anointed with Gorśīśa sandalwood as medicine. Therefore, I have come here to ask you for it." Having said this, the householder was overjoyed and invited the king himself to go to the treasury. He showed him all the wealth, including the seven precious jewels, and also showed him countless piles of sandalwood, saying, "Take whatever you wish." The king said, "I only need two srang (a unit of weight) of sandalwood, please give it to me." The householder gave him what he wanted. Then the king returned and instructed the householder, "Go and meet the Buddha." The householder asked, "What is a Buddha like?" The king said, "Have you not heard? The son of King Śuddhodana of the Śākya clan, having become weary of old age, sickness, and death, renounced the world and diligently practiced for enlightenment. He has manifestly become a Buddha, adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks, with miraculous powers and incomparable wisdom. He is the lord of gods and humans, and is therefore called Buddha." Having heard these words, the householder developed great faith and asked the king, "Where is the Buddha residing now?" The king said, "He is currently residing in the Bamboo Grove (Veṇuvana) in Rājagṛha." As soon as the king had left, the householder also went to where the Buddha was residing. When he examined the Buddha's body, he saw that it was even more excellent than that of King Bimbisāra. He was delighted and rejoiced, bowed his head, and inquired about his health. The Blessed One taught him the Dharma accordingly, and the householder attained the stream-entry (Sotāpanna). He knelt down on both knees and requested the Blessed One to ordain him. The Blessed One replied, "Welcome!" Then his hair and beard fell off by themselves, and he became a monk (bhikṣu). Then, the Blessed One again taught him the Dharma of the Four Noble Truths accordingly, purifying all the defilements of his mind, and he became an Arhat. Then, Ānanda and many others of the retinue asked the Blessed One, saying, "Bhikṣu Danbya

What kind of virtuous deeds must one perform to be born as a human, and although possessing the enjoyments of gods, not be attached to a household, but delight in renunciation and immediately attain the fruit? The Blessed One said to Ananda: Listen very well. In the past, beyond ninety-one kalpas ago, a Buddha named Vipashyin descended into the world. After that Buddha passed into nirvana, while practicing the Dharma before an image, about five hundred monks together made this vow: 'We will seek a secluded place and meditate on the path to enlightenment.' Then, in a certain garden, in a place with meadows and a spring, they established a secluded place. Those monks unanimously requested one monk, saying: 'This place of ours is far from the city, so if everyone goes for alms, you will be doing good for us. Please beg for alms for us.' The monk replied, 'I will do so.' Then he regularly went to the city, taught the Dharma to many patrons, and begged for alms. Among them, four people, because their bodies were suitable for practice, attained the fruit after ninety days. They unanimously told the alms-begging monk: 'We are very happy because of you, and we have also attained the samadhi that we hoped to attain. Tell me what you wish for, and I will fulfill your wish.' At that time, the monk was very happy and said: 'I wish that in the future, whether I am born as a god or a human, I may be rich and possess enjoyments, and that everything I need may arise naturally without having to work for it. May I meet noble teachers and hear the Dharma a hundred or a thousand times more than you, and may my mind be completely purified and attain the fruit.' The Blessed One said to Ananda: 'At that time, because the monk named Danbi helped the four monk friends with alms, for ninety-one kalpas, he was born into noble families among gods and humans.'

He was not born into a fallen lineage. Now, just by seeing me, he has gained faith. At that time, the Venerable Ananda and the monks, having heard what the Blessed One had said, each applied themselves diligently and attained from the first fruit to the fourth fruit. Some generated a vast Bodhicitta and abided in the irreversible stage. The Blessed One having thus spoken, they each rejoiced and were exceedingly delighted. The chapter called "The Householder Danbila," the forty-first, is complete. The forty-second, the chapter of Elephant Protector. Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, in the land of Magadha, a householder had a son born to him, who was handsome, pleasing to behold, and endowed with auspicious marks. When the child was first born, a wondrous golden elephant calf spontaneously appeared from within the treasury. The child's parents, seeing such a thing, were exceedingly delighted and showed it to a diviner, who also recognized that the child was endowed with the marks of merit. They asked what wondrous signs had appeared when the child was first born. The child's parents said, "When this child was born, a golden elephant calf spontaneously appeared from within the treasury." And so, the child's name was given as Elephant Protector. As the child grew larger, the golden elephant calf also grew. When the child walked, the elephant calf also walked, always accompanying him. The urine and feces of the elephant calf also turned into gold. Elephant Protector grew up and always played together with about five hundred sons of householders, each with their hearts set on one another. Later, one day, those children each spoke of what wondrous things were in their homes. Some of them said, "In my house, all the thrones, cushions, and bedding are made of the seven precious substances." Some said, "My house and gardens are all precious jewels." Some said, "My treasury is always filled with the finest jewels." Everyone spoke of their own wonders.
