He became completely pure. With faith, he requested ordination, and the Blessed One said, "Welcome." His hair and beard naturally fell off, and he became a monk. The Blessed One taught him the Dharma accordingly, and all the defilements of his mind were eliminated, and he became an Arhat. The Blessed One led him to Prince Jeta's Grove. At that time, all the people and animals living in that area were afraid just by hearing the name of Angulimala. People and pregnant animals were so frightened that they could not give birth. At that time, a female elephant was having difficulty giving birth, and the Blessed One said to Angulimala, "Go to the female elephant and say this: 'Since I was born, I have not killed a single person.' Speak a word of truth." Angulimala said to the Blessed One, "I have killed many people, how can I say that I have not killed?" The Blessed One said, "You are newly born from the noble Dharma." Then, Angulimala adjusted his robes and, as instructed by the Blessed One, went to the female elephant and said those words. The elephant gave birth smoothly, and Angulimala returned to his dwelling. King Prasenajit, with his army, set out to capture Angulimala. The road the army was traveling on came near Prince Jeta's Grove. In Prince Jeta's Grove, there was a monk who was short, ugly, and had a very melodious voice. The army heard him chanting in the temple and wanted to listen attentively. Elephants and horses also pricked up their ears and listened without being able to move forward. The king was surprised and said, "Why are the elephants and horses unable to move forward?" Someone replied, "Because they want to listen to the beautiful voice, they cannot move forward." The king said, "Even animals in the animal realm like to listen to the Dharma so much, how much more so should I, who am born among humans, listen to it." So the king went to Prince Jeta's Grove, got off the elephant carriage, and also put down his sword.

He took off his shoes and umbrella, and went to where the Blessed One was staying. He prostrated with his head and said to the Blessed One, "Who is that monk with the melodious voice? I would like to see him and offer forty thousand rapanas." The Blessed One said to the king, "He should be met after the offering has been made." If they were to meet beforehand, he would not want to give even one karshapana. Then the king met the monk, and because he was so ugly and short, he did not feel like giving even one rapana. The king knelt on the ground and said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, this monk's body is very ugly and short, but his voice is very melodious. What deeds did he do in the past that he has obtained such a result?" The Blessed One said, "Listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. In the past, a Buddha named Light Protection appeared in the world. After he passed away into nirvana, having worked for the benefit of sentient beings, a king named ... collected relics and built a stupa. Then, four dragon kings transformed into humans and came to the king. They said to the king, "Is this stupa being built for the relics made of precious jewels or of earth?" The king said, "If the stupa were to be built of precious jewels, there are not enough precious jewels, so it must be made of earth. Each side of the square is five yojanas long, and the height is twenty-five yojanas, so a stupa that is visible everywhere must be built." The four dragon kings said to the king, "We four are dragon kings, and since the king is building a stupa, we also thought of offering precious jewels." The king heard them say this and was very happy and pleased, and said, "It is good to have arranged it this way." The dragons also said, "Outside the four sides of the city, there are four large ponds. If the water from the pond on the east side is drawn and made into dye, everything will turn blue. If the water from the pond on the south side is drawn,

If you make a piglet, everything will turn to gold. If you put it in the western pool, if you make a piglet, everything will turn to silver. If you put it in the northern pool, if you make a piglet, everything will turn into white crystal, he said. After hearing the king say this, he was even more delighted and appointed one craftsman for each of the four directions, and had them each work on one direction. When the craftsmen of three directions had completed the stupa itself, the craftsman of one direction was lazy and could not finish it easily. The king himself came to inspect the construction of the stupa, and admonished the lazy one, saying, "You have not done well, so you have not finished it, and you will be punished." That man was angry with the king and said, "Such a stupa is too big and will never be finished." Then the king increased his urging, and everyone worked hard day and night, and at one time they finished it all together. The stupa was wonderful to see, the jewels shone, and the shape was especially good. The angry foreman was also very happy, repented of his previous faults, and hung a golden bell on the top of the stupa and made this prayer. "Wherever I am born, may I have a very sweet voice, and may all beings hear it and be happy. In the future, may I meet the Buddha Shakyamuni and be liberated from samsara." In that great king's time, at that time, the foreman of one direction was angry that the stupa was too big, and that was this monk. At that time, while he was angry, he merely said that the stupa was too big, and he was always short and ugly. Later, with a joyful heart, he offered a golden bell and hung it on the stupa, praying that the sound would be sweet and that he would meet me. Therefore, for five hundred lifetimes, his voice was very sweet, and now he has met me here and has attained complete liberation. After hearing the king say this, he was about to leave, when the Blessed One asked the king, "Where are you going?" The king replied to the Blessed One, "In this land there are fierce enemies..."
