Endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the world, Tamer of beings, Supreme, Teacher of gods and humans, may I become a Buddha, a Bhagavan. Having said this, he spoke in verse: Through this great generosity, may I become a self-arisen Buddha in all realms. Those not liberated by the previous conquerors, I shall cross over and liberate the majority of beings. Having thus made aspirations for unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, he said: Friend, do with my body as you please! Then, as soon as the Bodhisattva generated the mind of enlightenment, the earth shook in six ways. The gods dwelling in the sky also showered flowers and gave praise, saying: Well done, friend! Well done! Well done! You have done an extremely difficult deed. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, thought: This Bodhisattva has done an extremely difficult deed. Although I have the power to restore his body to its former state, I should moderately arouse his enthusiasm. Then he said to the Bodhisattva: Friend, when I cut your flesh, sever your tendons, and dissect your organs, did even a little displeasure arise in your mind? The Bodhisattva said: Friend, when my flesh was cut, my tendons severed, and my organs dissected, not even a little displeasure arose in my mind. When I experienced suffering, I was solely under the sway of compassion for sentient beings born in hells, animals, and hungry ghosts. The lord of the gods, Indra, in a non-human form, said: Friend, who would believe your words? The Bodhisattva said: I demonstrate my trustworthiness by urging the truth upon you. Indra said: If you are interrupted in urging the truth, then may this body of yours, through the urging of the truth, become as it was before! As soon as he said this, the Bodhisattva said: By the power of truth and truthful words, when my flesh is cut, my tendons severed, and my organs dissected in this way, there is not even a little in my mind

Displeasure did not arise, and when I experienced suffering, if I only felt compassion for sentient beings born in hell, as animals, and as hungry ghosts, then by the truth and the words of truth, may my body return to its original state. As soon as he said this, the body of the Bodhisattva immediately returned to its original state. Then, as soon as he saw this, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, rejoiced and hid his disguise, transformed into his natural form, prostrated at the feet of the Bodhisattva and said: It is not because I intended to harm you that I was displeased, but I only made you displeased in order to make you happy. From such diligence and joy as yours, you will undoubtedly attain perfect and complete enlightenment, and at that time, please remember me. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, asked the Bodhisattva for forgiveness, and immediately disappeared. Monks, what do you think? The king Shibi at that time, who abided in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was none other than myself. At that time, I also spoke with good speech and desired to speak well, but now that the Tathagata has become enlightened, why would he not speak with good speech and desire to speak well? Why is that? Monks, it is because I am the first to teach the Dharma. The second story of Shibi is: From the reason and the previous cause being the same, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, said to the Bodhisattva: What is the use of you being my student? Let me say something harmful to you. If you can do those harmful things, then afterwards I will speak that verse to you. The Bodhisattva said: Friend, please say that verse, and whatever harmful things you ask me to do, I will do. Friend, please speak that verse completely. As soon as he said this, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, immediately completely

Thus it is said. Then, the Bodhisattva draped his upper garment over one shoulder and, with palms joined, paid homage to that being who possessed the characteristics of the king of the gods, Indra, and non-humans. He received those verses in their entirety and recited and studied them for a long time. Just as a four-finger-wide nail is hammered into an empty wooden board, he lay down between two wooden boards and was squeezed. While staying there, he made aspirations to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. "Alas, by this root of virtue, may I become a guide for the blind world without a guide, a Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly and completely enlightened, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, knower of the world, tamer of beings, unsurpassed, teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, a Bhagavan." Having said this, he spoke in verses: "By this great generosity, may I become a self-born Buddha in all existences. Those who were not liberated by the previous conquerors, I shall cross over and liberate." Then, as soon as the Bodhisattva was squeezed between the wooden boards, blood flowed from his entire body, and the earth shook in six ways. The gods dwelling in the sky also showered flowers and gave praise, saying, "Well done!" The remaining part, like the story of King Shibi, should be told until the body is restored to its original state, inspired by the truth. Kauśāmbī: The Buddha Bhagavan was residing in the country of Kauśāmbī, in the garden of the householder Ghoṣaka. At that time, in Kauśāmbī, there was a nun who was fierce, powerful, held the Sutras, held the Vinaya, held the Matrikas, had deep roots, and had many attendants. She also had many bhikkhu friends, who were also fierce, powerful, held the Sutras, held the Vinaya, held the Matrikas, had deep roots, and had many attendants. A bhikkhu from Vaishali also came to the country of Kauśāmbī, and he was also fierce, powerful, held the Sutras, held the Vinaya, held the Matrikas, had deep roots, and had many attendants. His bhikkhu frien
