Not established. Therefore, he led all beings in the world onto the path of the ten virtuous actions. There, because they correctly followed the path of the ten virtuous actions, most beings were reborn in the heavens after death, and they filled the abodes of the gods. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, thought: What should I practice to become Indra? Or what should I practice to become Brahma? Then he saw that someone was practicing the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, thought: Is this a steadfast being? Or should I examine whether he is an unsteady being? If he is a steadfast being, then I should make offerings to him. Even if he is not a steadfast being, I should increase his mental strength. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, manifested himself in the form of a Rakshasa, sitting on the eaves of King Shibi's palace, and spoke half a verse: Alas! All conditioned things are impermanent, they are subject to arising and ceasing. After saying this, the lord of the gods, Indra, remained silent in a non-human form. Then, King Shibi heard the lord of the gods, Indra, speaking such words in a non-human form. Having heard it, he thought: This must be opening the door to the dependent origination of Nirvana. Or this is indicating the path to perfectly complete enlightenment. Then, King Shibi saw the lord of the gods, Indra, in a non-human form, sitting on the eaves of the palace. Having seen it, he quickly arose, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, and bowed with folded hands in the direction where the lord of the gods, Indra, was in a non-human form, saying: Friend, please speak the complete verse, and I will listen as a disciple. Indra said: What is the use of you becoming my disciple? I am tormented by hunger and thirst, and I am longing, not knowing what to eat. The Bodhisattva said: Friend, please speak the complete verse, and I will satisfy you with food. The lord of the gods, a hundred

The one with the appearance of a non-human said: Friend, can you satisfy me with food? My food and drink are difficult for you to give. The Bodhisattva said: What is your food and drink? He said: I eat the fresh meat of people who have just been killed, and I drink fresh blood. Then the Bodhisattva thought: Such flesh and blood cannot be obtained without killing. For the sake of my good speech, I cannot harm any other sentient beings. Thinking this, he said: If you can eat and drink my flesh and blood, friend, I can give the most. Please speak the complete verse, for the sake of good speech, I will give you my own flesh and blood. Then the Lord of the Gods, Indra, spoke the complete verse: Alas! All conditioned things are impermanent, they are subject to arising and ceasing. Having arisen, they cease, their subsiding is bliss. Then the Bodhisattva respectfully accepted the complete verse, and for a long time, after reciting and studying it, he thought: This is the door of dependent origination of the city of Nirvana! This is the path to the city of Nirvana! Through this path, all perfectly complete Buddhas will surely appear! Thinking this, he took a sharp weapon and said: Friend, for the sake of good speech, please accept this offering! Having said this, he cut off flesh from one side of his chest and gave it to Indra, the Lord of the Gods, who was in the form of a non-human, and said: Friend, are you full? He said: I am not full. In the same way, he cut off flesh from the other side of his chest and gave it to him. In the same way, he cut off and gave the flesh from his arms and all the flesh from his body, and then said: Friend, are you full? He said: I am not full. Then the Bodhisattva thought: Now is the time to completely give up the entire body! Thinking this, he made a prayer for unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment: Alas! By this root of virtue, may I become a guide for the blind in the world, a teacher for those without a teacher, a Thus-gone One, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha.
