Like being cooled by nectar, destroying the shell of the egg with wisdom, obtaining wisdom and clairvoyance, and individual correct understanding, not looking at worldly gains, attachments, and reverence, becoming a place where gods and attendants and others offer, remember, and respectfully praise. Then, at that time, a monk spoke in verse: For the sake of hearing the sweet Dharma, the teacher, even though ill, encourages. If you have the limbs of enlightenment, monk, please tell them. The venerable Ananda is wise and famous, and he requested the one who has attained enlightenment to speak. Hero, in your teachings, you possess those pure white dharmas. Mindfulness and discrimination, diligence and joy, and well-cultivated samadhi and equanimity, these stainless dharmas are your limbs of enlightenment. Having heard the essence of the limbs of enlightenment, he also understood the essence of the limbs of enlightenment. From the severe illness of the Blessed One, that suffering was pacified. Even the lord of the Dharma who teaches this precious Dharma, if he wishes to hear the Dharma, how much more so others, how could they not listen? The one with the ten powers surpasses all, he is the supreme wisdom of the monks. Whatever teachings there are, they will also be troubled by the desire to hear the Dharma. The holders of the Sutras, Vinaya, and Abhidhamma, are skilled in what is in accordance with the Dharma and what is not. If they listen to the Dharma, how much more so others, how could they not listen? The wise, having set aside the mind of wanting to know, listen in accordance with the Dharma, and for the Buddha's flawless teachings, they will similarly obtain joy. The mind is joyful, and the body is also greatly tamed, and one will also experience happiness. Having become happy, the mind will also touch samadhi. With the mind evenly placed, one will be able to discern the nature of conditioned phenomena. One will become weary of the suffering of samsara, and with a non-attached mind, one will be liberated. If one is constantly weary of samsara, one will not be attached to gods and humans. Like a fire without fuel, the Arhats will enter into nirvana. The benefits of listening to the Dharma, there are many others that the Victorious One has taught. Therefore, one should think that this exists, one should listen to the teacher's teachings. Then, the monks requested the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, well spoken.

Speaking is telling, and it is considered well-spoken. For the sake of the meaning of well-spoken, the Blessed One urged the venerable Ananda, and with respect, he listened and also observed the telling. The Blessed One said: Monks, the Thus-Gone One is not just speaking well now and considering it well-spoken. The Thus-Gone One also spoke well and considered it well-spoken in the past. For the sake of the meaning of well-spoken, listen to how I practiced extreme austerities. Monks, in the past, in a royal palace called Four Cities, there was a king named King Shibi. During that time, it was prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, and had good harvests, full of people and many people, with disputes and battles pacified, without wars and civil wars, thieves, diseases, and famine, possessing rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffaloes, without harm, and like caring for a beloved only child after removing a thorn, he ruled the kingdom according to the Dharma. That king also had a loving nature, possessed compassion, and there was no hindrance to his loving generosity towards beings. He engaged in giving and dedicated himself to accumulating merit. He gave food to those who wanted food, he gave drinks to those who wanted drinks, he gave clothes to those who wanted clothes, he gave ornaments to those who wanted ornaments, he gave beds to those who wanted beds, he gave vehicles to those who wanted vehicles, and he gave other utensils to those who wanted other utensils. He had a pharmacy equipped to treat illnesses, prepared all the necessary equipment, appointed doctors and nurses, and provided services to the sick and the helpless. He also prepared many foods and drinks and gave them to the creatures living in the sky, water, and land. He also made such a vow: From now on, I will give everything to everyone, and I will place the world on the path of the ten virtuous actions.
